Sepsis is a major global healthcare challenge.¹ Recent scientific developments provide rationale for hemoadsorption in patients with sepsis.² Adsorption is a process by which molecules are removed from the blood by binding to a membrane or other adsorbing substances.³ Hemoadsorption (formerly referred to as hemoperfusion) is the passage of blood through asorbent-containing cartridge or a hemofilter for selective or broad-spectrum solute removal via direct contact of the blood with the sorbent material or the filter membrane surface.⁴ Understanding of hemoadsorption provided by the 30th ADQI consensus conference is intended to guide the practice and research in the field.² Studies of endotoxin-based hemoadsorption have identified possible target phenotypes for larger RCTs.² As your partner, Baxter is committed to identifying sepsis and innovating for improved sepsis management. Today is World Patient Safety Day led by the World Health Organization, and we are acknowledging the care team’s efforts to monitor and record patient vital signs – a critical set of information that helps keep patients safe and clinicians informed. Vital signs like heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels sent to the electronic medical record can serve as a timely and accurate window into a patient’s health status. These vital sign parameters may contribute to early warning scores that can alert the care team of any changes or trends that may indicate if a patient is at risk of declining.
