6:09 pm Hello again Still in SF.WFH Tues-Wed-Thurs, work in the office in Mountain View Mon-FridayThis year I went to Mexico, been to Mt. Tamalpais, Mt. Shasta, Mt. Diablo, Muir Wood, Mt. Lassen, Yosemite, Big Sur, Monterey.Headed to Iceland, London, Budapest, Malta later this week.Haven't bought the boat yet. Soon after I get back and get re-settled.Cats are in good shape. That's about all I have to report.Been pretty busy. SF is a dense, dense city, still learning it, but getting a good feel for what's east of Van Ness. I rarely go west of Van Ness, other than to Golden Gate Park.Fun times.More laterCIao (1 Comment |Comment on this)

12:18 am San Francisco I moved to San Francisco.Holy shit. It was a company I used to be a customer of (and sold my old management on) so I (sort of) knew what I was getting in to.Initial recruitment came through in September-ish, went down in late October for a (long) interview, hashed out salary until about Nov 4th, put in notice on Nov 5th, peaced out just before Thanksgiving, avoiding having to do oncall duties for my old job on Thanksgiving and Christmas weekends.Moved in to the Nob Hill neighborhood, basically the core of Downtown. I take the train to Mountain View every day, it's a bit of a haul (50 minutes one way) but it's worth it. They pay a pretty competitive salary for the Bay Area, which is enough to make you do a double take. The checks keep clearing.Management seems to really like me. They know they hired the right person. The company is going places, and they have a smart (conservative) growth plan in place.Things are looking up.Next plan is to buy a boat, hopefully in early spring. (Comment on this)

5:11 am Not to brag or anything(!), but I am back to my HS Senior weight, down 35 lbs from where I was in 2008 when I was a tubby lard-butt.And I have a date with a girl from high school tomorrow. Funny how those things come full circle. My goal was to get down to about 12% body fat and then join a gym (why bother before that, for the first six months you can't see the results under all the fat, I don't have the attention span for that) but I seem to be stuck at 14%, my body seems to keep that proportion no matter what I weigh. Also I am taking off two weeks in July, I think am flying in to Budapest and then will take the train to Vienna, Prague, etc until I run out of money and then come home. I just need to get out of this fucking town and mentally check out for a while on another planet. This'll do until we come up with a cheap form of interplanetary travel. So I need to start jogging instead of cycling to get used to walking 5+ miles every day. I tend to all day every day when I'm traveling internationally. I might as well join a gym and get started on building upper body strength, right now I look like a holocaust victim (yes I made that comparison, you haven't seen me with my shirt off) with incredibly toned thighs/calves from cycling 100+ miles a week but it's doing nothing for me above my belly button. 1:47 pm So I did a thing todayhttp://www.strava.com/runs/5381254I bought a bike probably three weeks ago, it's an old, late 1980s aluminum frame, but has fancy stuff like top of the line (Ultegra) components, fancy name brand wheels, carbon fiber fork + carbon fiber seatpost + carbon fiber handlebars. Kevlar seat and some other stuff I'm probably not even aware of. I had to buy a bike pump that could pump up to 120psi to inflate my tires properly (my old one only went to 70... new). Between the helmet, airpump, water bottle and replacement tubes, I think I've spent as much on accessories for the bike as I have on the bike itself ($150).Things are moving along nicely for this job (knock on wood) and if I get it, I could coast downhill to work (it's about 150ft vertical drop over 2.5 miles), then after work hop on the dart rail (stops right outside my building), get out at mockingbird station and coast downhill to the house (it's about 80 vertical ft drop over 2 miles). Just coast to and from work. Apparently some of the guys I would be working with also ride their bikes to work. (Comment on this)

6:25 am what's the deal with news station websites playing a video of the text version of their article? if i wanted to listen to you drag out a 20 second bit of news in to a three minute segment, i'd be watching your show. normally this wouldn't bother me, but they've started making these autoplay when you open the link. so now i'm stuck digging through 20+ tabs to find your video and mute/close/pause it (Comment on this)

3:21 am sent in my formal application yesterday, got a phone call today from the manager yesterday afternoon, they want me to come in later today to talk to her and the department head. fingers crossed. i spoke to them both in person back in october and things went great. manager said during our phone call that i was on the top of her list. i hate afternoon interviews though; you spend the whole day waiting and waiting.also, it's just fun to get your parking validated downtown.paid the last of my overdue tickets with the city of dallas today. on the way back some vietmanese guy who doesnt yet speak english (he has a "visitors driver's licence") swerved in to me, put a 2' long white streak in my black paint on the bmw. i asked around and it sounds like it is going to cost 1000tohavethewholebackendofthecarresprayed(Blackisnotoriouslyhardtopaint−match).iguessthat′swhatinsuranceisfor.iwasthinkingitwouldbuffoutfor1000 to have the whole back end of the car resprayed (Black is notoriously hard to paint-match). i guess that's what insurance is for. i was thinking it would buff out for 1000tohavethewholebackendofthecarresprayed(Blackisnotoriouslyhardtopaintmatch).iguessthatswhatinsuranceisfor.iwasthinkingitwouldbuffoutfor300 or so.im really pissed about this because i just spent four days + 30reconditioningmyleatherandpaying30 reconditioning my leather and paying 30reconditioningmyleatherandpaying180 to get it registered through 2013 last week.my neighbor says they're getting rid of 1/3rd of the department they want to hire me for. i'm sort of curious how that will work out. either they would lay off the new people, or transition them in to another part of the operations department. they tend to not lay people off so that would be an interesting upgrade. also I noticed that OT is required at this job, which is easy to get since you normally have a 3 day work week and if you work day 4 or 5, both of those are counted as OT, which is a nice chunk of cash. 4:00 am well a fancy bank/finance company (is there any appreciable difference these days?) called me back after I interviewed with them in October three times, apologized and said they had to hire the other guy because he was friends with a team lead and two of the programmers in the division. but now two spots are opening up and they want to look at me again, or something.JUST as I perfect the art of beard trimming. I'm pretty sure the last time I shaved this thing off was for my cousin's wedding around christmas.anyways, it would be nice to work there. three weeks paid vacation to start, three days a week (yes, 5 day weekends), full time salary, and overtime starts at 36 hours. the department head was talking about promoting me to a technical analyst position during my interview for the entry level position. also the whole "two miles from my house, and a downhill bikeride to work every day" thing is a nice feature. oh, and there's a dart rail stop right in front of the building. the bmw doesn't get much use now, but i can probably stretch it's life out another three years if my commute is still walking distance. my last job had me sitting in the car 45 minutes each way. oh and vision and dental. i can't even remember the name of my dentist from high school. i'm probably due.also they reimburse you for the cost of tuition and whatnot. my friend that works there got his series 7 (stock broker) licence after being there for six months in the same position, and now he's getting ready to move up in the company as well. it's not a bad place to work. also it's on the 44th floor. so the view is nice. it's basically my dream job, with tons of room for advancement over the next 20 years or so. i'm not a big fan of "working for the man" but the benefits are very tempting and after one or two more adventures I will be ready to settle down and i'm not about to pass up this job opportunity. also the people are great, very laid back considering the traditional corporate culture, and i will very rarely be dealing with people over the phone, which is one of my weakest points. 8:29 pm Found one of my dad's old tools. A plain black unassuming black wire cutter with "MADE IN WEST GERMANY" in worn white lettering. I can't remember when I used the term "cold war era" in context. Posted via LiveJournal app for Android. (Comment on this)

8:18 am I had a great dream last night. I had rented a mountain bike and taken it to the top floor of a natural history museum housed in a giant skyscraper, and then took the long way down. (Comment on this)

11:07 am You have to make Russians really angry to get them to riot in December. Anyone can Occupy Wallstreet in balmy 75*F NYC, but you've got to be particularly enraged (or maybe just drunk) to be outside after dark in Moscow in December. http://worldnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/12/06/9245670-russias-arab-spring-clashes-break-out-in-moscow (Comment on this)

11:09 am another birthday I am 28 this year. Next year is my 10 year high school reunion. In a week it will have been a decade since my father died.I went to Mexico this year. That's about my only accomplishment of note. My cousin, Sarah will be getting married shortly before Christmas. Zakk moved to Houston from Tacoma and bought a 30' boat, he's living on it now. We spent about a month this fall looking for the right size boat.Jen, my old roommate, moved out on January 2nd to move in with her fiancee who only proposed to her en-route to the hospital because he had heat stroke and thought he was dying. Stacy moved in towards the end of February and moved out at the end of February in to the empty unit above mine, with her boyfriend. I'm currently looking for a new roommate.I watched the entirety of the West Wing. I built a set of community tools for webmasters. I went bowling with my mother. I went to my cousin's graduation. 4:53 pm time for the yearly update.i bought a new phone. i dated some girls. bought a new(er) car. trying to get rid of the old one. digging out the title that is stashed in one of four boxes. i cut out that violin from the foam. it is one step closer to completion. it's sitting to my right.getting ready for a ~2 week trip to mexico, sorting old paperwork. found this handwritten letter from my ex during her internship in NYC (Jun 25, 2005):Dear (Hadlock),Bored out of my mind at work. I was given one assignment all day. Computer is frozen. I miss you. 7 more weeks here. Maybe I can find something cool to do tonight. All my friends have awful hrs. I want to do something exciting. Maybe I will take a boat out on the lake in Central Park by myself. I'm running out of independent things to do. I had a lot of fun with Carol, but after last night I realize we are very different. She seems extreemly conservative. People think I'm crazy explorative and a crazy risk taker. Isn't that funny? Look what you did to me. It took me so long to get to this stage. 5 years of struggling to take risks for the sake of good times + good memories 5 years forcing myself to make excitment a natural part of my life. I don't regret it at all. But now it's kinda funny that it has become something I expect of other people. I am such a hypocrate. I told you I would never enjoy exploring on my own. I would never enjoy solo travel. I totally bashed you about it. Well, it turns out I love it. But 3 weeks of it is about all I can take. Well, I think this, but fall in love with it all over again. But I think my solo bliss is running out. 3 weeks of traveling on my own - I am so proud. Adventures are so exciting when you have no commitments, no long term projects to worry about, no homework, no studying... your life must be total bliss! ! No wonder you are such a lover of adventure. It is so fun to be as free as the wind. Yet lonely now. Work is mostly lonely. She didn't sign it. Spelling errors are hers. We continued to date another two years on and off.So here I go again, setting off, alone to another country (or two?). It's hard to talk about your ex without being vindictive on some level. She's married now. On occasion I'll run across pictures of her via mutual friends on facebook. She's never smiling in the photos. She's still living in the same apartment she was when she moved to Miami. I hope she's done some traveling since then. We went to europe together on a class trip in high school and she spent a few weeks in Israel before her move to Miami. While we were together, it was my self imposed duty to make her a happier person, and improve her sense of worth. I accomplished this by setting and achieving goals beyond family and financial goals. I'm not sure her husband does these things for her. That's what the lack of smiles represents.I think the reason I travel is to somehow say to myself "I was here! I existed! I did things and covered great distances. During my brief existence on this speck of dust of a planet, I met many people and during my time, I mattered."Travel is such a small amount of time we spend doing things though. How do you measure your worth? Is it worthwhile to try and justify your existence? Does crossing an imaginary line somehow improve your worth?Another friend wants me to visit them in D.C. I might go job hunting out there soon. I want to move someplace where I can do offshore sailing. (Comment on this)

11:25 am Balsa Violin Well I got back from South America. It was beautiful! Have to visit again sometime. This is my current project, a Balsa Wood ViolinIt's constructed using Doug Martin's method. Being built of balsa makes it far easier and faster to construct, using simple tools, than using harder traditional materials like spruce and maple. All the fine tuning of the tone is done by adding and subtracting from the outside of the soundboard after it's fully assembled, rather than during construction. (Comment on this)
