“If we let our vision of the world go forth, and we embrace it entirely, and we don’t try to piece together clever diplomacy but just wage total war, our children will sing great songs about us years from now.” - Richard Perle

Rem Koolhaas [Jun. 23rd, 2005|12:36 pm]irrilect
[music |Thirty-Thirty]The computer told me I should seek out this fellow:Rem Koolhaas' radical, deconstructivist design for the Seattle Public Library has been praised... and questioned. Early critics said that Seattle was “bracing for a wild ride with a man famous for straying outside the bounds of convention."The $156 million building will have an angular glass facade encased by meshlike metal "skin" that surrounds five levels. Many of the floors for the proposed building are also glass. Structural support comes from foot-thick copper tubes which form a honecomb pattern around the building. This copper "skin" holds together five platforms which appear to float. The platforms feature a children's room at the bottom; a living room for browsing, public meeting areas and a coffee shop; a mixing chamber where patrons can seek help from librarians; a reading room where most of the books will be stored; and staff offices.Koolhaas told reporters that he wanted "the building to signal that something special is going on here."The design runs counter to the traditional notion of a library as a place devoted solely to books. Although the design includes book stacks, emphasis is placed on spacious community spaces and areas for media such as technology, photography and video. The slanted roof and glass walls are designed to admit sunlight and capture views of Mount Rainier and Puget Sound.

I dreamt [Jun. 19th, 2005|12:48 pm]irrilect
[mood |releived] [music air ducts]"Well...I can't really explain it. It changed my life, definitely, you just have to watch it. I don't know why more people haven't seen it." This seemed to be everyone's opinion regarding this four-hour movie. I had never heard of it before, some art-epic, until a friend gave me the dvd with an accompanying coffee table book. I felt like I should get a big group of us, go to Darryl's cabin in the mountains one weekend and watch it, but we kept postponing the trip. Eventually, I noticed that the pictures in the book seemed to be changing. I figured out that there was an animated character in the film whose role would change depending on the viewer. Watching the movie would fill you with anxieties and ruin important relationships. When I woke up I realized that I've been putting myself through a lot of unnecessary stress.

The Black Squirrel keeps knockin' but he can't come in. For the third straight day, he came up on my window ledge a few times and asked to be let in. He went into Mati's room a few days ago and was chased out the front door. Then he went into Mehran's room and was chased out the window. I haven't stayed in D's room the last few nights. I was over there until 4am talking. She laid some heavy shit on me - not terrible abuse stories or anything like that - details about her beliefs, family, etc. I'm more than willing to put up with a lot, but I'd rather she be honest and up-front about the things that effect me directly if we're going into disclosure mode. At one point she said something like "but I'm bad...oh, nevermind". Basically she keeps dropping hints that she's lying directly and/or misleading me about some important things. Well, fuck, if she's going to let me know that she's dishonest then she'd better be prepared to say what about.

I reckon el diablo is a satisfying beverage, and one that clears the sinuses. The hibiscus margerita, though, is close kin to hawaiian punch. This news thanks to a Saturday night spent at Feenie's, in good company. Feenie is most likely a tosser, but the mushroom ravoli (thats what the menu said) brought tears to my eyes, literally. I think we were all relieved that Kate agreed to attend at the last moment. Her smile lit the room, like it always does. The myriad cocktail dresses and designer shoes of soap opera daughters were momentarily distracting, but Kate's presence brought my attention quickly to their hollow laughter and the glassy nervousness in their eyes.

The short ride home was frought with peril. They all had their clocks out for me.Whoever at allmusic decided Neil Michael Hagerty was his best solo effort was cracked-out. It should be obvious to anyone that The Howling Hex is the winner. Sometimes they wrongly rank consistency over quality. In any case, I was a damn idiot for not checking out the latter and Sweet Sixteen until now. Both are fine work by one and two of my greatest musical heroes.

well, its about time I update, let folks on the home front know the eggs are still cooking. Another spotless blue sky today, actually the first this week. The radio is off, enough fresh fruit and bread here for lunch. Lish, it's been more than a year since you left. I haven't seen that guy around for a long time either. He's still here, right? Or is he back there with you? He's not a bad guy, you know? You should give him a chance.I miss the sound of your voice. When you were on the phone talking to whoever in the reserve room, I would just lean back and close my eyes. Its the most beautiful speaking voice I have ever heard.
