I was reading in my friend feraluna's blog the other day and she was discussing enjoying talking about vampires with a person since vampires aren't the "now" monster anymore. She mentioned Zombies had largely taken their place in American pop culture. I thought about this. I was a bit dismayed. To me zombies are gross, mindless, classless slaves to someone elses whim. They are dangerous because despite those factors they are still driven to kill. On the other hand the vampire is seductive, dark, mysterious, elegant, with their own (blood)lust driven agenda. They are dangerous because they are able to sway you and convince you to stay. They seduce the most powerful and willful. They corrupt and that corruption is the power to the ultimate demise.

Then I was thinking about what time frame each of these icons were at their height. The vampire was at its pop culture peak from the mid 80's to the late 90's. The Zombie aesthetic did not really hit it's stride till the early 2000's. The mid eighties to the late 90's was a time of prosperity and social awareness. The 90's was marked by political correctness (however misguided) and a growing licentiousness that was an unabashed seduction of the senses. This was driven by an overall sense of social well being. People as a whole were relatively safe and the most dangerous things we usually had to deal with was the darker sides of our fellow man and our sexuality. The fear of giving in to the more primal aspect of ourselves. In the new millenia our society (I am speaking from an american point of view) is drastically different in its fears and drives. Poverty is growing. The tattered clothing of the zombie almost seems a reflection. Their is a push towards more base and uneducated society. Greed is there but it is not thinking caring prosperity it is mindless greed in the few and extreme poverty in the rest of the masses.. The media and government make there best efforts to overwhelm the masses with repeated messages to the point the apathy makes them mindless. The social control drives them on to go engage in act of death and mayhem unthinkingly (like war). Our outside fear is whaere we've been manipulated and robbed of our ability to think for ourselves. Our machinations are not our own. Our fear is losing our very status as people.

And this all came to me while I was scraping sealing wax out of my sink. I think I miss the vampire days. They were far more pleasant. You can have your zombies. I'm ready to go back to decadence and indulgence with the carnal nature to fear. At least I can reign it in if need be.

Time to eat some lunch. Mock egg salad (mashed cooked garbanzos, veganaise, and a load of paprika) sandwich. Not eating often enough makes the body try to hold onto the weight. And the tasty mock egg salad hits the spot.
