Albert Temple RIP I don't have much to add to my husband's tribute. I wish I'd got to know Albert better. He was a brilliant artist and storyteller and a wonderful man. We both miss him greatly.

The Panskepticism Hypothesis Observation: On a discussion of the theories of Jared Diamond, someone stated that "jared diamond debunked" gets 66000 Google hits. Someone else retorted that "evolution debunked" gets 1000000 Google hits.
Hypothesis: You can always find someone "debunking" It. Whatever It is.
Test: Searched Google for "cheese debunked"
Result: 1550000 Google hits, including at least one hardline cheese-skeptic.
Conclusion: Go me.
Disclaimer: The above is not intended to imply any opinion on the bunkness or otherwise of Jared Diamond, evolution or cheese.

Underreported Superstitions: Mirrors What dwells in the world behind the glass of your mirror? What lurks behind the reflected corners, the places your eyes can't reach?

"Nothing," you retort. "There is no world in there, just a trick of basic optics giving the illusion of depth and space where there isn't any." And in twenty-three out of twenty-four hours you'd be right.

In the twenty-fourth hour, the hour centered around midnight (the Real midnight, not Summertime), you'd be right nine hundred and ninety-nine times out of a thousand. And the other one time in a thousand is hard to tell; the Other Place is good at imitating true reflection. Maybe "your" face smiles back a little too broadly; maybe the mirrored colors are ever so slightly too bright or dim; maybe the reflected movements lag or run ahead a fraction of a fraction of a second.

It is best to take no chances. If you see your reflection in the hour around midnight, keep looking at it, and back away until it is out of view. The Other Place must mimic reflection as long as it is observed, and it cannot manifest when there is no longer a real person present for it to "reflect".

If the Other Place is there in the mirror, and you turn your back, what harm will happen? Nine hundred and ninety-nine times, none: the wall between worlds will hold, the Other Place will squirm furiously and impotently against the glass, and you will walk away and never know.

What will happen in the other one time, when the wall gives and the mirror opens and the people of the Other Place come through, silent and swift and fluid, is something I do not want to tell and you should not have to hear.

Movie trailers run long enough to get their own reviews now. The Box trailer review. Agreed about the general bloating, but... the reviewer just described "Do we kill someone for cash?" as a complex moral dilemma. What the heck?

It sounds like the original was a good sharp story but there's no obvious dilemma, just a nasty well-oiled temptation. Big important difference. It's a dilemma when something makes it hard to see the right choice. The button doesn't do that - it just makes the wrong one easy.

Prosecution, Egoboostion On trial for assault, England footballer Steven Gerrard. David Turner QC, prosecuting, lets flow the prose.
"Not many people on Merseyside, or indeed anywhere else, would refuse a request from Steven Gerrard ... a succession of well aimed uppercut punches delivered with the style and speed of a professional boxer..." Man, if I'm ever in dock I want this man prosecuting me. Turner QC knows how to butter up a defendant.

Quick check - is anyone else finding every single Google search result for any term apart from Youtube pages flagged "This site may harm your computer"?
Update: Okay, it's not just me and the mescalin then.

I've got an Earworm, A teeny tiny Earworm... It's a rock-and-roll number with an irresistable tune and a lyric composed of random cliché porridge run through a fit-the-rhyme program, or sounds like it - Ride a circle round the Sun / Touch - The - truth and burn! / Like a Mes-Sage on the run / Sea-sons change, turn turn turn! "In the name of Liberty" and "Heal this loss in me" are in there too. I want the witless thing out of my head. Now.

Actually, the band responsible have a lot of pretty fine numbers too. Maybe this one's their equivalent of Tailsteak's The Band's Parsnip Song. Though that's angry energetic nonsense and my earworm is sappy-clappy Bad Eurovision nonsense.

On closer websearching, I find it was "written for Key to the North, a film about Newark's involvement in the English Civil War". Which clarifies nothing.

Stan Lee's Harpies (YouTube clip) makes me appreciate the true genius of Ray Harryhausen. I mean, by comparison.
