Book reviews on The Long, Long Trail - The Long, Long Trail (original) (raw)
For many years, I have written books reviews for this site. Many of them were enabled by the publishers sending me a copy, and for that I thank them. During the period of the centenary of the Great War, there was a torrent of them. The reviews were sometimes also posted to Amazon or wherever I thought they might help.
Some of the books that I knew I would find useful, I have kept. The rest were generally given away, for example to my local Western Front Assocation branch as raffle prizes; or to charity. I have sold a few of the more specialist ones to a bookseller, and it helped pay the upkeep of the website. So far, so good.
The flow has dried up somewhat since the centenary, but there is still a healthy output of Great War work, especially when compared to when I first became interested in this subject. In recent days, though, one publisher has announced that they will now be only sending PDF versions to review unless there is a good case for supplying a printed copy. To be honest, this is a turn-off for me. Fine for finding specific content, not fine for actually reading. So I shall take this as a milestone. My reviewing days, at least for the larger publishers, are over !
