About Low Emission Zones in Scotland (original) (raw)
A Low Emission Zone (LEZ) covers specific roads. It stops the most polluting vehicles from being driven in the zone to improve air quality and protect health.

How LEZs work
There are four LEZs in Scotland, located in the city centres of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
LEZs operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This includes public holidays such as Christmas Day.
Automatic number plate recognition cameras check all vehicles driving in a LEZ.
The cameras detect vehicles which do not meet the required emission standard. These vehicles are called ‘non-compliant’.
Fines
LEZs are enforced by fines called Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs).
If your vehicle is non-compliant and is not exempt, you may get a penalty charge for driving it in a LEZ. You cannot pre-pay to avoid a fine.
