The BBC's new high-stakes crime drama, The Cage, is set to star Sheridan Smith
The BBC has unveiled a first-look trailer for the high-stakes crime drama, The Cage, set to star Sheridan Smith - and some of the scenes were filmed in Bolton.
The show has been written and created by BAFTA award-nominated Tony Schumacher, who was also behind The Responder, and all episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer on Sunday, April 26, while also airing weekly at 9pm on BBC One.
The Cage follows Leanne, played by BAFTA-winner Sheridan, the charismatic cashier at an inner-city casino who finds herself threatened with losing the family home and starts skimming cash from the casino safe to secure her family’s future.

According to the BBC's synopsis: "When Leanne discovers her boss Matty, played by Michael Socha, is doing the same thing, their lives are set on a collision course; with each other, the local gangster they’re stealing from, and the police. As Leanne’s loyalties are pulled in different directions, Matty battles with his inner demons, meaning the pair will have to play every hand perfectly..."
The series also stars Barry Sloane (House of the Dragon) as Gary Packer, Geraldine James (Dope Girls) as Nancy Packer, Anton Bibby (Liverpool Narcos) as Thomas Chapel, Freya Jones (Bolan’s Shoes) as Emily Flynn, Sophie Mensah (Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale) as Fen, Shaun Mason (Extraordinary) as Alan, Louis Emerick (The Power of Parker) as Paul, Sue Jenkins (Brookside) as Shelagh Flynn, Eileen O’Brien (Not Going Out) as ‘Nanna’ and Mona Goodwin (Extraordinary) as Trace.
The five-part thrilling characterful drama was mainly shot in and around Liverpool and Merseyside, but last year, some of the filming also took place at Le Mans Crescent, the go to location for many producers of hit television dramas in Bolton, as well as the picturesque village of Tockholes in Lancashire.
Ahead of the show’s release, Tony Schumacher said: "Coming back to the BBC with my second major show and being able to work with such talents as Sheridan, Michael and the teams at Element Pictures and the BBC is such an honour.
"On top of that, having a director of Al's calibre really is the cherry on the big Liverpool drama cake we're baking together. I'm hoping people will find it funny, dark, but most of all full of love, life and entertainment and I can't wait for the world to see it."
