Theni is a town in the Western part of the Tamil Nadu state and the headquarters of the district with the same name. The district is surrounded by the Western Ghats, along with the green stretches of the cultivated lands and tea gardens. Coffee seeds, Silk, cotton, mangoes, cardamom and soft towels are the main products of this region. Theni city is also known for its large scale trade of grapes, chillies, cardamom and cotton. Theni organises the second largest weekly market in Tamil Nadu. It is also the fourth largest market in entire South India.

Theni was formed in 1996 after it was bifurcated from the erstwhile Madurai district. The Vaigai River flows through Theni district and other rivers like Suruliyaru, Mullaiperiyar, Kottakkudiyaru, Varaganathi and Manjalaru also pass through it. Theni district covers an area of 3,242.3 sq km and had a population of 12,45,899 as per Census 2011.

Education

The district has many education institutes. According to the data available for the FY 2012-13 on the official website of the district, there are three universities, two government colleges, three government-aided colleges and 10 self-financed colleges. Along with these, there are six engineering and technology colleges, one medical, one agriculture (horticulture) and one forest in the district. There are also many primary, pre-primary, higher secondary and other schools in the region. Some of the polytechnic colleges in the city include Devangar Polytechnic College, Thangam Muthu Polytechnic College, Bharath Niketan Polytechnic College and Horticultural College and Research Institute.

Tourist attractions

The district also comprises many tourists attraction. The silver-lined clouds which rest on top of the green hill-tops along with the resounding cascades give a provide tourists a distinguished scenic view. The place is a tourists dream due to the hospitality of the local populace, the pastoral ambience and way of life. The waterfalls, dams and the numerous pilgrim sites make a visit to Theni interesting. The city also serves as a main route for tourists who are bound from Madurai to Kochi and from Madurai to Thekkady wildlife sanctuary. Suruli waterfall is a famous tourist attraction in Theni. Vaigam Dam and Shanmuganathi Dam are water reservoirs which are visited by many tourists. Vellimalai and Meghamalai are the hill stations in the city with natural and splendid beauty and are home to wildlife. There are many temples in Theni which hold religious importance such as the temple of shri kaliamman koil at Gandamanur, temple of Pathirakaliyamman at Pathirakalipuram, temple of Sri Veerappa Ayyanar at Allinagaram and temple of Kalahastheeswarar, Uthamapalayam to name a few.

Infrastructure

Madurai Airport is the nearest airport to Theni and it takes about two hours to reach the city from the airport. The Cochin Airport is located at a distance of approximately 170 km. Theni Railway Station is connected to many nearby cities in Tamil Nadu and some other cities in the neighbouring states. Tamil Nadu State Road Transport Corporation (TNSRTC) and some other private bus service providers operate buses within the city which connect it to cities like Madurai, Kochi, Chennai, Munnar and others.
