Jersey Mike’s sewage. Roaches on a rice container. Miami to Palm Beach restaurant issues (original) (raw)

Roaches, rodents and sewage water coming back up like leftovers that were left out too long highlight this week’s Sick and Shut Down List of restaurants closed by inspection.

What follows comes from inspections of places in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties done by the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation. We don’t choose who gets inspected. If you want to file a complaint about a restaurant, reach out to the DBPR.

In alphabetical order:

Cafe Centro Allora, 2409 N. Dixie Hwy., West Palm Beach: Routine inspection, 13 total violations, 11 High Priority violations.

Leading off with that old favorite, “Accumulation of a black/green mold-like substance in the interior of the ice machine/bin located in the back of the kitchen.”

The inspector counted about 50 rodent droppings under shelves in the kitchen dry storage area. Another four droppings were on dry storage shelves with food products. Two more on the floor under the dishwasher.

Also under there were two roaming roaches. Three more life roaches were behind a reach-in cooler.

An “employee touched a visibly soiled wiping cloth then handled clean utensils and equipment to prepare food without washing hands”

“Non food-grade bags were used in direct contact with food” in the walk-in freezer where carryout “thank you bags” touched the ground beef inside.

China Yan, 2846 NE Eighth St., Homestead: Complaint inspection, 29 total violations, seven High Priority violations.

“Observed a used glove stored inside the sweet plantain container.”

Oh, and a pet peeve at the Sick and Shut Down List, “In-use knife/knives stored in cracks between pieces of equipment.” A knife was shoved between the three-compartment sink handwash sink and preparation tables.

A man and two women working in food prep wore “ineffective” or no hair restraint.

Another kitchen worker “cracked raw shell eggs then handled clean equipment or utensils without washing hands.”

The front counter handwash sink was blocked by a ladder and a chair. The handwash sink near the exit didn’t have soap.

Nine live roaches crawled on the rice container and plastic oil container stored in the kitchen area. Another one was strolling in the dining area. Another was in the bathroom.

Ribs sat uncovered in a reach-in cooler. “Also, observed multiple foods not covered inside the reach-in freezer and the walk-in cooler.”

When the inspector returned the next day, the knife was still stored in a crack. The food still wasn’t covered. The ladder and chair blocked the handwash sink.

Also, “five live roaches crawling by rice bags that were stored in the kitchen area.”

They reopened after passing a second callback inspection.

Jersey Mike’s Subs, 9001 SW 107th Ave., Kendall: Routine inspection, three total violations, zero High Priority violations.

Paper towel dispenser technology exceeded the abilities of the front counter handwash sink’s paper towel dispenser. But a wet problem exceeded that dry problem.

Nobody could use the men’s or women’s rooms. The manager told the inspector that a pipe connected to the bathroom toilets was broken: “As per operator when toilets are flushed sewage water begins to back up from drains and toilets.”

Fabulous Soul Food, 4924 Pembroke Rd., West Park: Routine inspection, seven total violations, one High Priority violation.

Fabulous flamed out, starting with lukewarm water at the front counter handwash sink.

Ten live roaches were behind a kitchen reach-in freezer. Two roaches sat behind cookline equipment.

“Interior of microwave has an accumulation of black substance/grease/food debris.”

“Can opener soiled.”

Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, 15798 SW 58th Ct., Kendall: Complaint inspection, 20 total violations, one High Priority violation.

We told you earlier this week about mold and bugs at a West Kendall strip mall yogurt place. Not to mention the “slimy substance” in one place and the “sticky substance” somewhere else.

Peyton’s Place Bar & Grill in the DoubleTree by Hilton, 13400 W. Sunrise Blvd., Sunrise: Routine inspection, eight total violations, five High Priority violations.

The DoubleTree probably could have done with more Peyton Place and less Amityville.

Two flies landing on clean, plastic pans at the sandwich station. Two more on a sandwich station shelf with food and clean utensils. Look up and see the 38 flies “landing on walls and ceiling in the food preparation area.” Another 28 flies were on the ceiling over the dishwasing area.

Buffet line shredded cheese wasn’t under a sneeze guard.

A Stop Sale got dropped on fish thawing in a low boy cooler. It’s commercially processed reduced oxygen packaged fish that’s supposed to stay frozen in the reduced oxygen packaging until it’s used.

The wiping cloth sanitizer solution wasn’t a solution because it had no sanitizer. What was supposed to have 200 parts per million of sanitizer had zero.
