Yes, a Microsoft 365 Personal, Family or Premium subscription7 is required to use Microsoft Defender. If you're already an existing Microsoft 365 subscriber, you'll gain access to Microsoft Defender upon sign in. If you're not currently a Microsoft 365 subscriber, you'll be required to purchase a plan to access Microsoft Defender upon sign in. See Microsoft 365 plans.

No, there are different protections across operating systems. Defender on Windows includes identity theft monitoring. Antivirus and anti-phishing is provided by Windows Security. Defender on MacOS includes antivirus and identity theft monitoring. Defender on Android includes antivirus, anti-phishing, and identity theft monitoring. Defender on iOS includes anti-phishing and identity theft monitoring.
Yes. Because our priority is to ensure your device has protection, the Microsoft Defender app1 works with built-in Windows Security or your third-party antivirus solution—rather than replaces it.
Identity theft monitoring2 helps protect you and your family by monitoring your personal information on the dark web for breaches. Microsoft 365 Family subscribers get identity theft2 and credit monitoring 5 for their family members. If the family member is over the age of 13, the organizer will need the member’s consent to either manage or monitor their personal info. Family members over the age of 13 can change the organizer’s access at any time. See getting started with identity theft for more information.
Credit monitoring5 helps you stay on top of changes to your credit score. Users who provide their social security number within the Defender app are able view their credit score and receive notifications whenever events happen related to their credit score. Credit data is sourced from Experian®. Credit score is a single bureau VantageScore 3.0 provided by Experian®. The monthly credit report is provided by Experian® using single bureau data. Microsoft does not save or store your personal information when you use identity theft2 and credit monitoring.5 This info is stored and secured by Experian®. Your personal info will not be shared with or sold to a third party or used for purposes other than monitoring. If your personal info is compromised online, Defender will alert you and provide guidance on what action to take to resolve the breach.
