Bauxite was discovered in 1821. Mining ceased in 1991.
Presence of small hexagonal crystals of gibbsite.
Currently flooded, the adits are not accessible and the site is said to be dangerous.
Other quarries/mines were exploited in the nearby Val d'Enfer (Enfer valley); most of them closed around 1935. The "Carrières de Lumières" near Le Baux was turned in an underground museum site, where multimedia reproductions of famous artworks are projected onto the rock walls.
