Channel 5 teases new show Cast Away

While Phillip Schofield is returning to television, his comeback hasn't had the full backing from his former colleagues just yet.

The former This Morning star, 62, revealed he is to take part in a brand new Channel 5 series called Cast Away, bringing to an end his 16-month absence following his resignation from ITV. On Tuesday evening, Phillip teased his Instagram followers of a big announcement before news broke of his Channel 5 filming.

The three-episode series sees the former Dancing on Ice co-host stranded on a desert island off the coast of Madagascar for 10 days. They will be left alone to document their own experience using a variety of cameras. The synopsis for the show read: "The famous face has to confront the challenges of total isolation, the forces of nature, and the battle within their own mind."

On Wednesday morning, Phillip shared images of himself on the show and penned: "Now you know how I spent my Summer! Alone for 10 days, no food, no water, no crew. My story of survival, both on a desert island and off it. Cast Away starts Monday on @channel5_tv & My5 at 9pm."

However, while thousands of his followers clicked the like button, his news wasn't met with much warmness by his celebrity pals. Despite the post being live for almost two hours, only two famous faces close to Phillip appeared to like his news - Dermot O'Leary and Josie Gibson. Comments on the post had been turned off.

Each episode of the show will be on Channel 5 at 9pm and is an hour long, concluding at 10pm. It will be aired on Monday, September 30, Tuesday, October 1 and Wednesday, October 2.

The show marks Phillip's return to television after he resigned from ITV May 2023 after admitting to an "unwise but not illegal" affair. At the time, he admitted he had lied to his wife, management, legal team and ITV about a secret relationship he had been a part of with a much younger male colleague. The scandal and subsequent fall out with long-time pal Holly Willoughby led to Phillip keeping a low profile.

Following the announcement he is returning, fans have had a split reaction online. On Twitter/X one user in support of his comeback said: "Unpopular opinion but quite looking forward for #phillipschofield documentary"

However, some were more sceptical. One user added: "If this is designed to make people feel sorry for him, it will backfire massively. People were just starting to forget, and now they are raking it all up again." Another responded to the news: "Phillip Schofield being given tv time again.... really?"
