Victoria Derbyshire has revealed the sickening abuse she suffered from her dad.

The BBC star has opened up about how he once threw scalding soup over her and also wrapped his hands around her throat. Victoria, 55, recalled the abuse she suffered from her dad, Anthony, which also included being beaten with a wooden spoon and being hit with a belt.

He also abused her mother and left her with a broken rib. In a candid admission, the former I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! star said that when Anthony returned home, she and her siblings would instantly flee to their bedrooms after hearing his key in the door. Despite enduring such painful abuse, Victoria says she tried not to flinch – even when Anthony hit her.

Speaking to the Independent, Victoria - whose dad died in 2020 and denied hitting his children - said: "He got me up against the pantry door, his hands around my neck. My best friend was there, shouting at him to get off me." She added that not flinching, was her "way" of showing her abusive father that she couldn't be riled.

"I just looked at him with contempt in my eyes," she said while recalling the stomach-churning moment he threw scalding hot soup over her. Victoria went on to add: "He could see it. I didn't say anything, I didn’t scream. I just got up, went to the sink and washed it off. It was my way of trying to show that he wasn't affecting me."

Victoria noted that her dad didn't drink and there was no explanation for his actions. She later discovered that he had been abused by his own dad – but stated it didn't excuse his actions. One incident that remains clear in Victoria's mind is her mum, Pauline, visiting the doctor after Anthony broke her rib.

"The doctor's note just read: 'Husband trouble,'" she claimed. In a bid to escape the abuse, Victoria, her mum and her siblings went to live with Pauline's sister before eventually returning to the marital home. In 2020, Victoria went viral online after she fronted a BBC news segment with the phone number for a domestic abuse helpline written on her hand.

The National Centre for Domestic Violence estimates that one in four women and one in six to seven men experience domestic abuse in their lifetime. Last year, 2.4 million adults were women. Shockingly, the police have recorded over 1,500,000 cases of domestic abuse-related incidents across England and Wales in just one year.

Statistics from the NCDV state that women are more likely to experience repeat victimisation, and be physically injured or killed. They state that domestic abuse consists of the following: physical abuse, sexual abuse, violent or threatening behaviour, controlling or coercive behaviour, economic abuse and psychological, emotional or other abuse.
