The country that gave the world the game of football waits... and waits... and waits. England's sole triumph in major tournaments came on home soil at the 1966 World Cup. Since then, there have been a handful of near-misses, semi-final defeats on penalties at the 1990 World Cup and European Championship six years later, and then in extra-time at the same stage of the 2018 World Cup, and a whole lot of frustration.
