A gardener has offered a top hack for checking if your plants need watering without even touching the soil.

With plants being so temperamental in about their water needs, it's worth picking up as many tips as possible to ensure they're staying hyrdrated, and not being overwatered. TikToker Samantha Rose Holdren, who has more than 100,000 followers on her account, shares tips on wellness and mindfulness, but has also offered a genius trick for keeping your plants alive. On the video, she is talking while watering her plants with a garden hose. As she does, she says: "This is probably one of the best garden hacks. This is going to save you a lot of time, and a lot of plants' lives."

"How to tell if your plants need water?", she asks. "Just kick the pot". As she does, she can be seen giving the plant pot a quick kick. She explains that if the pot doesn't move, then it doesn't need water. If the pot moves considerably, then it needs hydrating. The hack certainly went down a storm online, as it went viral – racking up more than 99,000 likes and hundreds of comments. One follower exclaimed: "Great tip!" While another added: "Love it, thanks." A third chimed in: "Young lady your dad is a genius! Thanks for sharing!"

While a fourth said the use this too, adding: "Not going to lie as a professional horticulturist, I walk around the greenhouses doing this all day and tipping hanging baskets!" However, others had questions, as one person asked: "What if it’s just a heavier pot?" Another TikTok user had the same question for plants in the group, while someone else said: "But… if there are rocks at the bottom, it will be heavy by nature." Replying to the last message, Samantha wrote: "True that. You will still be able to tell the difference between water and no water if the rocks don’t weigh it down too much."
