Five top pirate movies (original) (raw)

Five hearty-ly great pirate movies...

1. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (2003) The film that kicked off the franchise was actually based on a Disney theme park ride and went on to gross £400m and receive five Oscar nominations. The original and best of the bunch.

2. CAPTAIN BLOOD (1935) Errol Flynn starred in this early swashbuckler that plays a bit like Robin Hood on the high seas. Flynn and co-star Olivia de Havilland - who's still going strong at 94 - went on to make eight more movies together.

3. MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND (1996) Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang featured in a unique twist on Robert Louis Stevenson's novel. Both David Bowie and Mick Jagger were considered for the role of Long John Silver before Tim Curry was cast.

4. THE SEA HAWK (1940) Flynn was back on the ocean in a yarn inspired by the adventures of Sir Francis Drake. It cost a then astronomical £1.7million to make and was directed by Michael Curtiz, who three years later gave us the Humphrey Bogart classic Casablanca.

5. TREASURE ISLAND (1950) With England subbing for the West Indies, Disney's first full live-action film featured a dazzling turn from Robert Newton as Long John Silver. His cries of "Arrrr" are thought to be the first, inspiring countless imitations.
