A husband was left gobsmacked after his wife demanded a lavish gift for giving birth to their first child.

Push presents are gifts given to new mothers, usually from the baby's dad, after giving birth as a token of appreciation and a reward for having the baby. Gaining popularity in recent years thanks to social media and celebrities sharing their fancy presents, this husband was shocked when his wife demanded a new car for her highly anticipated push present, after being influenced by TikToks from other new mothers.

He said his wife had seen videos of women sharing houses and cars they'd been gifted, and then expected the same from her husband and told him to dip into his savings.

He took to Reddit to share his shock at her request and said it's given him the 'ick'. He wrote: "I understand seeking appreciation from your husband for what women go through during pregnancy and childbirth, but it's the materialistic part that gave me the ick. The decision to bring a child into the world is both partners' decision. My wife in our case is not forced to be a mom or be pregnant, as she wants to be a parent too.

He the claimed his wife had demanded he should "dip into personal savings to get her a car exclusively for her". He further detailed: "I looked at her, almost shocked and began laughing. I thought she was joking, and I pressed her if she was actually serious. She got very annoyed that I thought she was joking... and she flatly said that she expects a real push present."

He revealed he'd planned to get her some jewellery under £500 ($700) as well as a thoughtful card, but this made his wife not feel 'worthy enough'. The post added: "I said that her gift is the gift of parenthood and the realized outcome of a healthy baby. And materially speaking, I'll probably gift her a Mother's Day card, a day out or some jewelry she wants (total under 700 dollars), but nothing more.

"I said if she really wants an extra car, it'll be 'OUR' car, not just hers. She pressed more and said how it isn't enough for what she will go through. She kept pushing and pushing and asked me if I thought she was not worthy enough.

"I told her she is worthy as my partner and the mother of my child, but she has to be realistic and realise that none of us, individually speaking, is worthy of what she's asking for," and claimed his wife now isn't speaking to him and is "crying arguing about it."

The husband added: "I heard her criticising me to her sister on the phone but under no circumstances would I ever considering gifting HER a car. I feel bad she is hurting right now but I don't feel bad for giving her a reality check."

Fellow Redditors flocked to the comments to express their fury. One person said: "Damn I was thinking some roses or maybe necklace with baby's birthstone," while another said: "I wish people would stay off those stupid f***ing TikTok videos.

A third penned: "Those TikTok videos absolutely wreck relationships," and a fourth said: "I have heard of jewelry or spa days but not cars or houses. That sounds like a uber rich person thing."
