Most Mirror readers think Donald Trump is on his way back to the White House

Having survived an assassination attempt and undeniably benefiting from a string of gaffes by Joe Biden, Mirror readers believe Donald Trump is destined for a return to the White House.

National polls showing the defiant Republican pulling ahead of the frail president were already piling on the pressure for the Democrats to find a replacement ahead of November's election. And now the head of state has stepped aside, the current favourite to take over the helm is vice president Kamala Harris, with recent polls suggesting she would fare about the same as Biden in the forthcoming election - and still lose to Trump.

Ms Harris has now secured enough delegates to earn the Democratic Party's nomination as presidential candidate. An Associated Press tally had her backed by 2,214 delegates - well beyond the simple majority needed to secure nomination on the first ballot.

However, it's worth remembering the survey is unofficial, with Democratic delegates free to vote for whoever they choose. Ms Harris will not be the official candidate until what is known as the 'roll call' is completed at the Democratic Party Convention later next month.

In our poll Do you think Trump will make it back into the White House? A sizeable 800 readers said yes, while 200 said no.

Gleeful Republican's seem full of confidence their man will regain the presidency. Following the attempt on his life in Pennsylvania, bookies recently gave Trump a 70 per cent implied chance of winning - which was a colossal 50 points ahead of Biden. This is in stark contrast to April where both were level pegging. This huge gulf could well prove too much for the Democrats to claw back.

There's little doubt Trump's fist-pumping defiance has struck a chord with many US voters, effectively neutralising the Democrat's strategy of attacking the former president personally and labelling him a 'dictator'.

America is truly at a crossroads.
