An eight-year-old boy has died after falling from a window in a house, police said.

Nottinghamshire Police said officers were called to Costock Avenue in Sherwood, Nottingham, by East Midlands Ambulance Service at around 7.15pm on Wednesday.

The boy was taken to Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham but could not be saved. Officers remain at the address investigating the circumstances of the incident.

Chief Inspector Jon Scurr, of Nottinghamshire Constabulary, said: "This is a tragic and devastating loss of life and our thoughts are with the boy's family and loved ones.

“I would like to thank those that have already reported information to us, and would urge anyone who hasn’t yet done so, to please make contact as soon as possible. We are acutely aware that incidents of this nature are incredibly distressing for all concerned, and are felt by the entire community."

A tweet by the police force tonight reads: "This evening we were called to Costock Avenue, Sherwood, by paramedics after a child had been reported to have fallen from the window of a house. The child, an eight-year-old boy, was taken to Queens Medical Centre but has not survived his injuries."

People have shared their thoughts to the family on social media this evening. One post reads: "How awful and so sad feel for his family and friends. Thinking of his family at this heartbreaking time." Another says: "Thought are with the young boys family and friends at this time. So sad to read this. Fly high little angel." A third comment on Facebook reads: "So heartbreaking, may god give his parents strength, god bless him forever."
