Firefighters tackled a huge blaze at a recycling centre in Bermondsey, south London

A huge fire broke out at a recycling centre in south London, with thick smoke seen billowing across the skyline.

Around 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines tackled the blaze at a building on Landmann Way in Bermondsey on Monday evening. Two 32-metre turntable ladders were also deployed to help extinguish the fire, London Fire Brigade (LFB) said. The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

The blaze led to travel chaos, with National Rail warning that rail services were affected to, from and through London Bridge.

According to National Rail, train services have yet to return to normal. The fire caused some lines to be blocked, with services to and from London Bridge cancelled, revised or diverted.

Cause of fire under investigation

The cause of the blaze is now being investigated.

Fifteen fire engines attended the scene in Landmann Way, Bermondsey, after receiving multiple calls at around 5.30pm, the fire service said.

The LFB confirmed the fire was brought under control shortly before midnight and its cause is under investigation.

The fire in Bermondsey is now under control.

Firefighters are continuing to work at the scene to damp down remaining hotspots.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: "There are currently no reports of any injuries. The cause of the fire is now under investigation."

The vehicle supports frontline appliances by laying large-capacity hose lines over long distances to supply water to the fireground.

LFB tells residents to pour water on loose embers

Station Commander Wayne Bloomfield, who is at the scene, said in an update on London Fire Brigade's website: "Firefighters are working hard to extinguish a large amount of refuse alight at a recycling centre.

"Due to the significant amount of smoke in the area, local residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

"Loose embers have also been reported, which is normal during large fires. Residents are advised to pour water onto them if they are concerned about loose embers on or near their properties, but if they do catch something alight, don't hesitate to call 999."

Disruption expected until 10.30pm

Disruption to Southeastern and Thameslink services departing from, arriving at or passing through London Bridge station is expected to continue until 10.30pm, National Rail has said.

National Rail statement on disruption

National Rail said:

"Emergency services are currently dealing with a fire in the London Bridge area. Rail services are currently disrupted. Fires in railway areas present a serious safety risk, as they can damage signalling equipment, power systems, and track infrastructure, and create unsafe conditions for trains and staff."

Services running to, from and through London Bridge have been cancelled, diverted or revised, with disruption expected until at least 8.45pm.

Southeastern services are being diverted to London Victoria where possible, while Hastings line trains are starting and terminating at Tonbridge. Thameslink has suspended services between London Bridge and Dartford, with passengers advised to allow at least 45 minutes of additional journey time.

Southeastern and Thameslink services remain heavily disrupted, though Southern services are continuing to run normally to and from London Bridge. The London Overground's Windrush line is also affected.

Fire near railway tracks, says Southeastern

Southeastern has said the fire is at a property next to railway tracks.

The rail operator said trains to and from London Bridge are being diverted via alternative routes. It added that customers can use their Southeastern tickets at no extra cost on London Underground services between London terminals, the Elizabeth Line, High Speed services on all routes, and the DLR on all routes.
