Ten dogs - including eight puppies - have died after heartless thugs threw them into a canal in a Sports Direct bag with a brick.

The disturbing discovery was made by a member of the public who spotted the bag in the Leeds Liverpool Canal in Leeds. RSPCA officers fished the bag from the canal, along with fire and rescue services.

Tragically, RSPCA officers found two adult French Bulldogs in the bag, alongside eight puppies, two of which were Terrier pups, who were all deceased. A brick was also discovered in the bag on May 20.

The grim find follows a discovery bearing chilling similarities a year ago, Leeds Live reports. A family of five dead Frenchies were all pulled from the same canal which had also been discarded in a Sports Direct bag.

Animal Rescue Officer Hannah Williams from the RSPCA said the two disturbing incidents had raised suspicions, adding the pooches appeared to have been intentionally and needlessly killed. Hannah said: “It is very suspicious that two identical incidents have occurred in the same area, both families of French bulldogs and both in Sports Direct bags. It seems highly likely that these are linked.

“It's awful to think what these poor dogs went through and I'm keen to piece together what happened leading up to finding them. They didn't appear to be in ill health which makes us, very sadly, believe they could have been intentionally drowned.

“This would be an awful act of animal cruelty and we are urging anyone who has any information about this possibility to get in touch with us so we can find out what happened to these poor dogs. If anyone has any information at all which can help us, please do get in touch."

She urged people to check their security cameras to see if they saw anyone carrying a Sports Direct bag close to the location on 20 May. Anyone with information should call the RSPCA’s appeals line on 0300 123 8018, quoting reference 1268568.
