A man has been shot dead in the street in broad daylight in the centre of Barcelona.

The man was killed on Carrer de Balmes at around 10am local time (9am UK time) before the gunman fled, according to reports.

The victim was murdered with a shot to the head, ElCaso.cat reported, with the attacker managing to escape following the slaying.

The man was shot on the city centre street in front of the National Police's DNI office, which issues National Police ID cards and passports, the outlet said. The Catalan police, with agents from the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC), have reportedly taken charge of the investigation.

The police have images of the suspect and a gun was recovered from the scene. A law enforcement operation has now been launched to try to hunt them down.

Barcelona is currently on a heightened state of alert ahead of a visit from Pope Leo XIV this evening.

Just three days ago, last Sunday, a man was also shot dead in the Zona Franca. Police are investigating this second case as a revenge execution within the context of drug trafficking, ara.cat reports.
