England 28/1 to repeat famous 2001 scoreline against Greece - and new Three Lions manager odds revealed (original) (raw)

We’ve teamed up with bet365 to bring you the latest odds ahead of the UEFA Nations League clash between England and Greece

Lee Carsley is taking charge of his third England game on Thursday evening, which will be against Greece

Unbelievably, it’s almost a quarter of a century since David Beckham bent in a last-minute free kick against Greece at Old Trafford to seal England's place in the 2002 World Cup.

The visitors had almost produced a shock, twice taking the lead at Old Trafford either side of Teddy Sheringham's goal. But it was captain Beckham who took the plaudits after an all-action display to help pull England over the line.

Back then, it was Sven Goran Erikkson leading the Three Lions. This time around, interim manager Lee Carsely is in charge, hoping to avoid a Greek tragedy against a team who have recorded back-to-back wins against Finland and the Republic of Ireland.

Since the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2018-19, no team has won more games in the competition than Greece (W13 D3 L4). They have conceded the fewest goals (eight) and kept the most clean sheets (14) of any nation in that period.

Still, it’s England who have the superior record in this fixture, registering seven wins and two draws in the nine meetings between the sides. Kick-off is at 7.45pm on Thursday, with the fixture taking place at Wembley.

While England haven’t lost any of their last 17 competitive matches at Wembley - a run stretching all the way back to October 2020 when they suffered a Nations League defeat to Denmark, Greece have lost just one of their last 14 games in the competition. That came against Cyprus in September 2022.

Dominic Solanke is the standout addition to Carsley’s latest squad, having been handed a Three Lions return seven years after his last call-up.

The Tottenham Hotspur frontman last featured in a senior England squad in 2017 during a friendly international match with Brazil.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham, Manchester City's Phil Foden, and Chelsea's Cole Palmer also return after missing out due to injury last month.

The Three Lions have also made a perfect start to the new campaign, securing 2-0 triumphs in each of their opening two Nations League clashes with Ireland and Finland.

A victory against Greece means Carsley could become just the fifth manager to win each of his first three games in charge of England after Walter Winterbottom (first four), Glenn Hoddle (first three), Sven-Goran Eriksson (first five), and Steve McClaren (first three).

Carsley will also be aiming to become the first England manager to win his first three competitive matches in charge since Fabio Capello in October 2008, and the first ever to do so without conceding.

His impressive start means the 50-year-old former Everton player is the favourite to be named as the full-time England manager, ahead of Thomas Tuchel, Pep Guardiola, and Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.
