Arne Slot points out four things Liverpool failed to do in Nottingham Forest defeat

Arne Slot said his Liverpool players only had themselves to blame after their defeat against Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool won their first three league games under new manager Slot without conceding a single goal. However, it was they who failed to net on Saturday as Callum Hudson-Odoi scored a second-half winner.

Slot's team had 14 shots to their opponents' five but couldn't find a way past visiting goalkeeper Matz Sels. They also dominated possession against Nuno Espirito Santo's men without being able to make it count.

The Merseyside club remained second in the table at full-time thanks to Brighton's failure to beat Ipswich. They now sit three points behind league leaders Mancheser City, though, after Pep Guardiola's team beat Brentford.

"The result frustrates the most and we cannot be happy about how the game went," Slot said after his team's defeat. "It was a stop-start game and we hardly created any chances.

"We only have to look at ourselves, we have to be better. Far too many times we lost the ball around the area, it was not good enough. We have to be better with the ball.

"Our decisions and execution wasn't good enough. In general we defended quite well but the two fast players came on and made it difficult. We took a lot of risk and in the end it was a very good goal."

Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo praised the hard work of his own team after they remained unbeaten with the win. "Realising Liverpool are such a good team it required a lot of effort from the players, the organisation, tackling and the cover," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "The only way to achieve anything here is if you are organised and do everything that you can."

Liverpool won't have to wait too long to put things right. They're back in action on Tuesday in the Champions League, with AC Milan their opponents at the San Siro.

Their last away game against the Rossoneri brought a 2-1 win under Jurgen Klopp in December 2021, with Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi scoring the goals. After their trip to Italy, Slot's team will return to Premier League action with a game against a Bournemouth side who they beat 3-1 last term, before welcoming West Ham to Anfield in the EFL Cup a few days later.
