Ben White celebrated Arsenal's winner right in front of James Maddison during Sunday's north London derby.

The Gunners right-back was in the box when the corner came in, watching on as Gabriel rose highest to head home the winning goal just after the hour mark. The Arsenal players reeled away in celebration, following their Brazilian centre-half towards the away end.

White, before joining, found himself face-to-face with Maddison and was quick to celebrate in front of his compatriot. The Tottenham playmaker was unable to mastermind an equalising goal as the hosts struggled to breakdown their well-drilled opponents.

Arsenal's defence has been a real strong suit with White becoming a stalwart at right-back. He originally shifted out to accommodate William Saliba two years ago but has gone from strength to strength on the flank, making himself a regular.

White's performances have been worthy of international recognition but the Arsenal man is understood to have clashed with former England assistant Steve Holland at training. Gareth Southgate stood by his No 2 and White made it known that he didn't want to be considered for the Three Lions.

That has continued despite the change of manager with interim boss Lee Carsley also explaining that the former Brighton man was unavailable to him. "We spoke about this in the squad selection," he said. "Every player that is eligible to play for England is in with a chance. As far as I'm aware he asked to not be contacted. If that changes, that will change."

White's performances at club level continue to earn him huge plaudits with the Arsenal backline looking increasingly settled. Jurrien Timber's return to full fitness has allowed him to slot in at left-back with Gabriel, Saliba and White already established members of the defence.

Arsenal's battling win ensures they keep up their impressive north London derby record

The Gunners were without key personnel for their short trip to Tottenham but Arteta hailed the character they showed to pull off a 1-0 win.

He said: "The people that we have, I think I already spoke about it during the week, people that are harder, they have thick skin, they love the game and they love winning. In order to love the game and win, you have to do a lot of things - sometimes people call them ugly. Enjoying doing those ugly things is a big compliment of this team right now, and when you're able to normally, you get a good gift."
