Lionel Messi won his eighth best player in the world crown last year, but despite Argentina's Copa America success, he is not the favourite to take the crown for 2024, with a first-time winner almost certain

It is the most important individual prize in football: The Ballon d'Or.
Lionel Messi, the current holder and eight-time winner, will not make the podium after not making the 30 nominess. Whoever wins, will instead be earning the title of the world's best player for the first time.
Real Madrid and Spain stars are prominent after their respective successes in the Champions League and Euro 2024. Vinicius Jr - who has made clear his desire to take the top prize - Rodri and Jude Bellingham are among the favourites for the trophy - while Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland is in contention.
Mo Salah has missed out on a nomination but the Premier League has still seen 10 players nominated. Phil Foden, Ruben Dias, William Saliba, Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer have all made the cut for journalists to vote upon.
The nominations for the women's award have also been made. Barcelona's Aitana Bonmati, the current holder of the award, is once again in contention.
The 26-year-old will face competition from the likes of Lauren James, Lucy Bronze, Lauren Hemp and Khadija Shaw. With the Lionesses well represented on the shortlist for the main award, their manager, Sarina Wiegmann, has also been nominated for the coach of the year award.

Salah snubbed?
Salah finished 11th in last year's voting and still racked up 39 goals and assists last term but has missed out on 2024's top 30 players. The Liverpool star has started this season pretty well too with three goals and three assists already.
