Clinton Morrison feels Birmingham's League One rivals are now out to get them

Clinton Morrison has warned Birmingham City that their League One rivals will be out to get them following their remarkable summer spending splurge.

The Blues spent in excess of £20million despite dropping out of the Championship last season in a bid to set themselves up for an instant return to the second-tier. They obliterated the League One transfer record on deadline day to sign former loanee Jay Stansfield for a fee in excess of £15million.

Birmingham host Wrexham in a mouthwatering League One clash on Monday night with the Red Dragons also expected to be in the promotion mix with the back of American owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

And former Blues striker Morrison reckons his old club are maybe facing the only other team in the division who will be as targeted as them following their spending habits.

Speaking to Mirror Football via 10bet, Morrison said of the Stansfield deal: "For me, it's a good signing. Everyone's going to talk about it.

"It is a lot of money, but that's the world we're in at the moment. I do think he'll score a lot of goals in League One. He scored goals in the Championship, so he'll definitely score goals in League One.

"When you splash the cash like Birmingham have, a lot of other clubs can get the needle. Everyone will be calling them Hollywood, a little bit like Wrexham, but the players will have to deal with that. I really hope that they can go up this season."

Birmingham spent more than £15m to bring Jay Stansfield back to the club permanently

The deal to bring Stansfield, 21, back to St. Andrew's raised eyebrows throughout the pyramid. The former Fulham man made a major impression on loan last season but luring him back seemed a big ask given it would require him to drop down two divisions.

Morrison feels Stansfield will become an instant target for players after moving for Premier League money, but he's confident the player's bloated price tag won't affect him negatively. Morrison added: "Jay Stansfield is a brilliant young player. He is a real bright spark that can play on either wing. It cost a lot of money to make that transfer happen, over £15m.

"The Blues fans loved him when he was on loan last season. They’ll be pressure on him to deliver, and he’ll be a target for a lot of clubs, but that’s what comes with being a record signing. He’ll be a marked man, but he can deliver. He looks like a confident young man.

"Will he feel that pressure of being a record signing? I think he's already winning by being at the club last season - he knows the club and the fans know what he can do. He was brilliant last season. That helps him. It won’t take him any time to adapt. OK, there’s a new manager, but they’ve started the season reasonably well."
