Premier League winner accused of escaping to avoid making transfer - 'A strange person'

Former Leicester star Daniel Amartey remains at Besiktas after club claimed he ran out a back door to avoid completing a transfer away from Turkish giants this summer

Former Leicester City midfielder Daniel Amartey has been accused of doing a runner by current club Besiktas to avoid being sold.

The 2016 Premier League winner denies disappearing from a training ground back exit after the Istanbul club branded him “a strange person” having seen seven potential moves collapse - including one to Saudi Arabia.

Amartey is under contract for two more years but the club are keen to move the Ghana international on. Besiktas claim he was also offered more money to join a club in Dubai after an agreement was reached with Al-Shabab.

Following that a move to domestic rival Eyupsor allegedly broke down when Amartey said no and expressed his desire to leave the club in the winter transfer window instead.

But Amartey said of the accusations: "They are completely untrue. Nothing like that happened - those allegations should be disregarded."

That came after Besiktas spokesman Huseyin Yucel said: "Amartey is a strange person. We made an agreement with a team from Saudi Arabia, but he did not get on the plane. We agreed [a deal] with Eyupspor, but he escaped through the back door of our facilities.

"He said, 'I will go to Germany or England'. When he was told the transfer window is closed, he said, 'How will it close?'"

Amartey made 145 appearances for Leicester in all competition across eight seasons having arrived from Copenhagen during the Foxes’ glorious 2015-16 campaign. He also won the FA Cup in 2021, by beating Chelsea in the final, but he left the East Midlands last year to join Besiktas at the end of his contract.

He made 18 league appearances for Besiktas last season but has not made an appearance so far in this campaign and has not been given a shirt number. Amartey was also not part of the squad submitted to UEFA ahead of their Europa League campaign.

There are a number of former Premier League players in the Besiktas squad - including former West Ham defender Arthur Masuaku, ex-Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is currently not part of the first-team plans but is eager to work his way back into a fresh opportunity.
