Apple confirms new iPhone with big features at a surprisingly low price (original) (raw)
Apple has just lifted the lid on its new iPhone 17e.
Many had predicted it; now it's official. Apple has now confirmed its newest smartphone: the iPhone 17e. Succeeding last year’s iPhone 16e, this latest model continues Apple’s strategy of delivering key features at a more affordable price than its flagship siblings.
The iPhone 17e starts at £599 — more than £200 less than the iPhone 17 and £500 cheaper than the 17 Pro — and now comes with 256GB of storage as standard, doubling the base capacity offered by its predecessor.
It looks like a decent price but what else is new?
Firstly, Apple has boosted the performance thanks to the speedy A19 chip under its shell. This will offer a noticeable upgrade over the A18 processor found in the 16e. It’s also equipped with Apple’s latest C1X cellular modem, which promises speeds up to twice as fast as the previous C1. With that tech inside, it means quicker downloads and smoother streaming when you’re away from Wi-Fi.
On the front of the 17e is a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display that delivers sharp, vibrant visuals and is protected by Apple’s durable Ceramic Shield glass to guard against everyday knocks and scratches. Improved anti-reflective technology also helps cut down glare for easier viewing in bright conditions.
Perhaps one of the most welcome additions is MagSafe. Absent from the 16e, the feature makes wireless charging faster and allows users to easily attach compatible accessories like wallets and stands to the back of the phone.
Photography fans get a 48MP Fusion camera. While the 17e doesn’t include a dual-camera system like some higher-end models, Apple says its advanced sensor effectively delivers two focal lengths in one, making it easier to zoom in and compose shots. It also supports 4K video recording with Dolby Vision at up to 60 frames per second.
Safety features remain a priority. Emergency SOS via satellite enables users to send messages when there’s no cellular coverage, and Crash Detection can automatically contact emergency services if it detects a serious car accident.
The iPhone 17e will be available in black, white, and a new soft pink finish. As mentioned, pricing begins at £599.
Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, said: “iPhone 17e combines powerful performance and features our users love at an exceptional value, making it a compelling option for customers looking to upgrade to the iPhone 17 family. With A19 for incredible performance, double the entry storage, a smarter camera system, and enhanced durability, iPhone 17e is designed to stay fast, secure, and valuable for years to come.”
