Sky rivals Amazon and Google with a smart home upgrade that's surprisingly cheap (original) (raw)
Sky has announced the launch of a new smart home device for £5 per month.
Ring doorbells and Google's Nest system may be among the UK’s most popular home security devices. However, there’s now a new rival for consumers who want to keep an eye on their property while they’re away. Sky has just unveiled two new smart home plans that include internet-connected cameras, along with full cloud recordings from just £5 a month. It's a surprising price that Sky says could save more than £100 compared with buying a Ring system through Amazon.
So, what do these new plans offer, and how much do they cost?
There are two options available. The first includes a Sky Smart Doorbell and Chime for £5 per month, plus a £15 upfront fee.
The package offers full HD video recording, instant alerts sent to your phone, customisable activity zones, two-way talk, and 30 days of cloud video storage.
For those wanting extra reassurance, there is also the Smart Home Bundle with Smart Home Plan+.
Priced at £8 per month with a £20 upfront fee, this package adds an indoor camera and extra app features such as scheduled arming and automatic arm modes.
Commenting on the launch, Paul Sweeney, Managing Director of Sky Smart Home, said: “Sky Smart Home is about making high-quality smart tech more accessible. We’ve taken the features customers value most and made them easy to use, simple to manage and affordable, so staying connected to home feels effortless rather than complicated.”
The new plans are designed to make Sky’s home security devices more widely available. Until now, the company mainly offered Protect Smart Home Insurance, which bundled cameras and alarms.
These latest packages mean Sky Smart Home products can now be purchased as standalone services for the first time.
For comparison, Amazon is currently selling the Ring Doorbell with Chime for £119.99, reduced by £20. Customers wanting cloud recording access would also need a Ring Protect subscription, which starts at £4.99 per month.
