Europe's sunniest city needs to be on your radar this summer

Brits looking for sunshine on their summer holidays may want to head to Spain, which is home to Europe's sunniest city.

With its golden sandy beaches, cheap hotels and brilliant nightlife Malaga in the Costa del Sol has long been a firm favourite with UK sunseekers, but now there's one more reason to head to the Spanish hotspot.

According to the travel pros at Holidu, the holiday hotspot boasts around 280.2 hours of sunshine every month. Throw in average temperatures of 26C in late May, as well as averages of 29C to 33C between June to August, and it's not difficult to see why UK holidaymakers flock to the city to escape the drizzly British weather.

The travel insiders explain: "Malaga conquers first place in the ranking and can this year call itself the sunniest city in Europe. Here, you will enjoy an average of 280.2 hours of sunshine every month. Sunseekers can enjoy the beaches and pavement cafes all year round in this beautiful Spanish city!

"But you shouldn’t go to Malaga just for the sunshine, its cultural and culinary offerings are also not to be overlooked. From the Pompidou and other world-class museums to colourful festivals like the Feria de Malaga, there is a lot to experience in this city."

If you're after cheap accommodation, Holidu has apartments from £350 for a week, while those after package holidays won't struggle. For example you can find deals from £213 with Loveholidays, while TUI has last-minute deals from £382pp and Jet2 offers city breaks with £60pp deposits, to name a few.

There are plenty of stretches of sandy beaches in Malaga from which you can enjoy the sunshine; the likes of Malagueta, El Palo, and Las Acacias have been voted as some of the best beaches in the region on Tripadvisor. You can hire sun loungers, and there are plenty of facilities such as toilets, beach showers, and promenades lined with tapas bars, shops and restaurants when it's time to take a break from the sun.

However, be warned that it can get busy during the school holidays, and some visitors have said that it can be tricky to bag a sunlounger unless you're willing to get up early.

Malaga wasn't the only Spanish destination in the rankings. In fact, out of the top 15 sunniest cities in Europe, eight were in Spain including other popular holiday locations such as Palma de Mallorca and Alicante.

The top 15 cities were:

  1. Malaga, Spain
  2. Alicante, Spain
  3. Murcia, Spain
  4. Catania, Italy
  5. Seville, Spain
  6. Cordoba, Spain
  7. Marseille, France
  8. Madrid, Spain
  9. Zaragoza, Spain
  10. Athens, Greece
  11. Palma de Mallorca, Spain
  12. Nice, France
  13. Rome, Italy
  14. Bari, Italy
  15. Palermo, Sicily

Of course if you are planning a trip to Spain, make sure you take note of a series of new rules for tourists. Depending on your chosen destination you may face smoking bans on the beach, drinks limits at all-inclusive resorts, and new dress codes when you step off the beach back into the city, with hefty fines for rule-breakers!
