He might have only just started his Strictly journey, but one judge already had some rather savage words for JB Gill.

The JLS singer, 37, is raring to go on the Strictly dance floor - 12 years after he jived on the Christmas special with former pro Ola Jordan. He's also received some sage advice from Aston Merrygold, who appeared in the 2017 series but was controversially eliminated early.

"He just said to be myself," he said of Aston's words of wisdom, but also revealed that judge Craig Revel Horwood had already issued him with some criticism. "I like to work hard, of course. I’ve been told by Craig when I did my reveal that I have to work on my technique - so technique’s going to be a big thing. Obviously because I come from a performance background, I’m used to being on stages like that so they’re going to expect that side to be there or thereabouts."

JB also explained that he is looking forward to learning the various different dances which have their "little quirks and individualities".

"The dances are so different and I think that’s one of the things that I’m looking forward to learning all the different disciplines - ballroom and latin, they’re very different," he said. "The different dances - cha cha vs salsa vs samba. They’ve all got their little quirks and individualities, so I’m looking forward to getting to grips with that. I did a dance to Jive, which was obviously very upbeat so if I get a chance to do that again I’d love to do it. I had a lot of fun doing it.

"To be honest, I really don’t know what to expect - I did that one dance and I’ve never ever done any ballroom or latin other than what we’ve done since we started this. I’m very much a blank canvas and looking forward to getting stuck in."

The singer is one of nine men in this series - which features the fewest number of women ever in the show's history. It has been suggested that allegations targeting both professional dancers Graziano Di Prima and Giovanni Pernice may have had an impact on the recruitment for Strictly 2024.

Quizzed on whether the allegations had changed his view of the show, he said: "For me, no, because I think a lot of those incidents would have been standalone anyway. I obviously look at it based on people who I know have done the show, I’ve had lots of friends who have done the show in the past.

"I’ve of course watched the show through the 20 or so years it’s been going. Whilst of course in those situations they would have their own validity, I just feel like we’re very into it. It’s a unique situation and I think especially given what’s happened in the past , the show have definitely put steps in place to hopefully avoid any further situations like that. And when you think of all the success the show’s had, you think of all the people who have been through it and have had a fantastic time. Helen Skelton said it was an incredible time for her, absolutely changed her perspective on life at the time - with what she was going through … overall it was a fantastic opportunity."
