Sue Barker opens up about 'handling' of Question of Sport axe

During Tuesday's This Morning, viewers saw Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley chatting with former Question of Sport stars Sue Barker and Phil Tufnell.

Sue Barker opened up about her exit from Question of Sport after a 24-year stint as the show's presenter.

Ben weighed in: "One of the things I struggled with a little bit from the outside was how it ended for you guys because it wasn't necessarily how you would've chosen. I mean these things are never going to be easy."

Phil agreed as he replied: "For sure, I just look at it as we had a fantastic time. I was very lucky."

He shared with the presenters his journey from being a repeat guest to becoming a long-standing team captain, reports the Express.

Phil went on to say: "It was a huge honour! I did it for 13/14 years, met these guys, had a great laugh and you can't do it forever can you?"

Sue chimed in, expressing dismay at the manner in which the BBC handled their release from the programme.

She remarked: "It's their show, it's their right. They wanted to make changes and do everything and that's absolutely fine.

"We totally accepted that, it's just the way it was handled. But, it's all gone now and we're back together."

In 2020, the BBC decided to revamp Question of Sport by bringing aboard new host Paddy McGuinness and team captains Sam Quek and Ugo Monye.

Sue Barker hinted that the broadcaster tried to make it look like leaving her role was her own choice, a narrative she didn't agree with.

In the same interview, Sue and her former colleague Matt Dawson discussed their upcoming tour, A Question of... Live.

When asked about what the audience can expect, Sue said: "A lot of audience interaction, we ask the audience because they (Phil and Matt) need a bit of help. Of course, we'll definitely have the charades game."

Sue went on to describe the format as akin to Question of Sport, featuring two teams of three competing over two rounds.

Phil Tufnell chimed in, hinting at surprise appearances: "It's going to be a sporting who's who basically because a lot of people will come on."

This Morning continues weekdays on ITV from 10am.
