- Along with this dedicated and skilled team, Dr. Mitchell is experienced at diagnosing, recommending, and overseeing treatments among patients with darker skin tones and melanated skin. Many conditions manifest or appear differently on darker skin when compared to how they “show up” or affect lighter skin tones; for instance, skin cancers like melanoma are not limited to our fair-skinned friends and family members. In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) reports that individuals of African or Asian ethnic backgrounds tend to develop this serious form of cancer on their feet and hands, and it may present as dark lines underneath the toenails or rapidly growing and persistent sores or ulcers on the feet, especially at the site of previous injuries. With such knowledge of how skin and related dermatological conditions can develop among patients with darker complexions, Mitchell Dermatology is ideally equipped to identify problems early. This supports prompt and proactive interventions. And, in the case of cancerous masses, such prompt treatment can be life-saving. - Mitchell Dermatology understands that not all therapies are appropriate for darker skin types, generally characterized as “Type 5” and “Type 6” on the Fitzpatrick Scale. These skin types range from brown (tans easily and rarely burns) to dark brown or black (never burns and tans very easily). Some laser therapies, especially earlier-generation devices, have not been kind to all skin tones. In fact, historically undesirable side effects have accompanied treatment with such light-based devices. These risks have traditionally included hypopigmentation or the development of persistent patches of skin at the treatment site that are darker than the surrounding skin. Our team is aware of how different types of procedures and devices affect different types of skin. As the likes of laser technologies and systems have evolved, we may recommend a system/specific wavelength that is tailored to your needs and does not present additional risks. Your safety is, of course, her priority.

Hope Mitchell, MD, is the founder and medical director of Mitchell Dermatology and an Ohio board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist with over 25 years of experience and expertise. Dr. Mitchell obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Rochester and Doctorate of Medicine from The Medical College of Ohio, where she also completed an internship in Internal Medicine and a Pathology Fellowship. She also completed a residency in dermatology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, and is certified by the American Board of Dermatology. She advocates mentorship, education, and diversity in medicine and dermatology. She is the founder of the Mitchell Dermatology Student Gap Year Internship Program. She has been featured in many newspapers and magazines and is also a speaker for Google and Black Women in Media too. Dr. Mitchell is the Vice Chair and Director of Research for The National Medical Association, Dermatology Section. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, and a Member of the Skin of Color Society and National Medical Association.
