Rookie Matt Boldy, in his 13th NHL game, recorded his first career hat trick Monday and the Minnesota Wild held on to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 7-4 at Xcel Energy Center.
The Red Wings (22-22-6), coming off back-to-back victories over the Philadelphia Flyers, haven’t won three in a row since a five-game streak from Nov. 24-Dec. 4.
Minnesota (30-11-3) tallied five unanswered goals after falling behind 2-0 barely four minutes into the game. The Wild scored three power-play goals and improved to 11-1-1 in their past 13.
Dylan Larkin notched a goal and assist for the Red Wings. Gustav Lindstrom scored his first career goal. Lucas Raymond and Sam Gagner scored goals. Moritz Seider and Tyler Bertuzzi each picked up a pair of assists.
Raymond one-timed a pass from Larkin past Kappo Kahkonen on the power play at 9:43 of the third period to cut Minnesota’s lead to 5-3.
The Red Wings pulled goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic for the extra skater with 5:44 remaining. They turned it into a six-on-four advantage after Kevin Fiala was penalized for high-sticking Robby Fabbri with four minutes to play.
The had some chances on the power play before Gagner scored shortly after it expired, with 1:45 left, to cut his team’s deficit to 5-4.
Kirill Kaprizov, however, sealed the outcome with an empty-net goal with 49 seconds to play, his second of the game. Ryan Hartman closed out the scoring with 15 seconds remaining.
The Wild scored seven times on 25 shots.
Kaprizov snapped a 2-2 tie at 4:54 of the second period on a shot from the face-off circle after the Red Wings missed an opportunity to clear the zone and the Wild kept the puck in at the point.
Boldy completed the hat trick with his second power-play goal of the night at 18:15 of the second. He fanned on a shot that hit the goal post, but the puck hit Nedeljkovic’s leg and went in.
Boldy, the 12th pick in the 2019 draft from the U.S. National Under-18 team, added an assist and has seven goals and 14 points in 13 games.
Joel Eriksson Ek gave the Wild a 5-2 edge with a power-play goal eight minutes into the third.
The Red Wings started strong with goals from Larkin and Lindstrom 2:34 apart early in the game to lead 2-0.
Larkin notched his 25th goal at 1:27. Seider broke up a rush in his own end and quickly passed to Larkin. Larkin carried into the Wild zone and had clear sailing to the net after Jordie Benn fell.
Lindstrom’s first goal in his 69th NHL game came at 4:01 on a wrist shot from the point through traffic as the Red Wings capitalized on a turnover.
The lead didn’t last long, however, as Boldy scored twice in a span of 2:35.
He scored at 5:29 after making a good move in the slot and then tied it at 8:04 on the power play on a redirection from the slot off a shot by Mats Zuccarello. The Red Wings were scrambling to sort out their defensive assignments on the play.
