5 Boutique Hotels in Lech am Arlberg, Austria (original) (raw)

Lech am Arlberg is an alpine village in the Arlberg ski area of Vorarlberg, Austria, situated at an elevation of 1444 meters.

This celebrated ski resort boasts a 5-month snow-sure winter season and attracts the crème de la crème.

In summer, Lech mellows out and serves as an ideal base forhiking in the Lechtal Alps and Lechquellen Gebirge. Visit Lech in summer and prices are significantly lower and the crowd is far more laid back.

The River Lech flows through the pretty village center. Hotels, restaurants, and shops line the river on both sides. And, solitary Omeshorn towers above Lech to the south.

The best hotels in the Arlberg region are concentrated in the village of Lech.

However, there are some excellent ski-in-ski-out hotels in Oberlech (“Upper Lech”), which is situated at an elevation of 1750 meters. Oberlech is connected to Lech by an aerial cable car. In winter, Oberlech is car-free.

1. Der Berghof

4-star superior

Der Berghof Bedroom, Lech, Austria

Der Berghof, Lech am Arlberg, Austria

Wiener Schnitzel, Der Berghof, Lech am Arlberg, Austria

Der Berghof is an elegant boutique hotel in the center of Lech, very close to the tourist office, Rüfibahn cableway, and Rüfiplatz bus stop.

Breakfast is included and half board is optional.

Bedrooms

Each bedroom is tastefully furnished with high-end materials.

We stayed in the charming, jewel-toned Omeshorn room. We loved the color palette, the velvet furniture, the high-quality wool carpet, and the bathroom fixtures and tiling.

It’s evident that no expense was spared in the concept and creation of this room, and all rooms at Der Berghof.

Aesthetics aside, bedrooms are soundproof and the beds are extremely comfortable.

Guests are treated to a welcome fruit basket and the local, natural cosmetic line Resa Wants.

Wellness & Spa

The hotel’s spa, Der Bergquell, is wonderful. We loved the intuitive layout, the modern saunas, and the plunge pool.

The wellness area is open from 2 pm – 8 pm. And, when the weather is poor, they heat up the saunas before noon.

The hotel’s wellness area encompasses:

The wellness experience is further enriched by the readily available salt exfoliant pastes for the steam bath and bath salt for the foot bath.

There’s also a tea and snack far with dried huts, dried fruit, and fresh fruit.

Hotel Restaurant

Breakfast

Guests can look forward to a rich and healthy breakfast buffet, featuring sliced cheese and meats, spreads (hummus, liptauer, etc…), eggs and bacon, breads and delicious croissants, homemade jams, muesli and yogurt, a juice bar and a premium loose leaf tea bar. The breakfast was extraordinary.

Dinner

A gourmet 5-course dinner menu is designed each day, suitable also for vegetarians and pescetarians.

It’s possible to substitute some of the daily courses for Austrian favorites, like Wiener Schnitzel vom Kalb (no extra charge), Tafelspitz (additional 8 EUR), and other options.

The hotel’s kitchen is focused on bringing together fresh, regional ingredients to create interesting fusion dishes and reinvent classic dishes.

Though we enjoyed the fresh, modern concoctions, we loved their traditional Austrian dishes the most. Their Schnitzel was to die for.

Bar & Lounge

The bar and lounge area at Der Berghof is cozy and elegant. It’s a lovely space to enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif, cocktail, or glass of wine.

In winter, a crackling fire warms up the lounge.

On Wednesdays, you can join a weekly dance evening with live music from the Swing Tonic Trio.

Staff & Atmosphere

The staff is professional and detached.

It’s difficult to describe the atmosphere, because we stayed in Der Berghof in late September during the Philosophicum Lech, an annual Philosophical Symposium event.

The vast majority of guests were affiliated with the philosophy event, which contributed to a more professional and stiff atmosphere.

The only thing that disappointed us was the reception. One receptionist was friendly, but seemed like she was in a permanent dream state.

The other receptionist lacked sufficient knowledge about the region’s hiking trails.

Good to know

Der Berghof has a private, underground parking lot.

There’s an outside elevator that connects the hotel to the main village street of Lech am Arlberg.

The hotel’s sun terrace is a nice place to relax and read.

You can rent bicycles for free.

You can rent e-bikes for 30 EUR per day.

You can get your hiking boots cleaned every day for free.

During your stay, you can book a variety of massages and beauty treatments (body peeling, facials, anti-aging).

Hotel Restaurant

Breakfast

The breakfast buffet is very good, but it could be more substantial.

Afternoon Snack

A very generous, complimentary afternoon snack is prepared daily. Guests are treated to savory dishes as well as homemade cake.

Dinner

Each evening, a decadent 5-course dinner is prepared by Chef Matthias Fiebig and his team.

We were blown away by the bold creativity, delightful presentation, and astounding flavors of each course.

From the crème goat cheese topped with beetroot, cherry and chocolate to the chorizo and corn cappuccino, each dish is equal parts fanciful and delicious.

It’s a refreshing departure from traditional Austrian cuisine.

Staff & Atmosphere

The family and staff work side-by-side to ensure that every guest is well looked after. During our stay, we realized that many of the guests were return visitors, loyal to the hotel and very fond of the staff.

There’s absolutely no artifice here. It’s one of the most genuine and welcoming hotels we’ve ever stayed in.

The receptionist was extremely helpful before and during our stay.

Good to know

In winter, you can rent ski equipment at the hotel ski shop and receive a 10% discount.

In winter, guests can rent cross-country skis and boots and bobsled for free.

3. Hotel Sonnenburg in Oberlech

5-star Stammhaus and the 4-star Landhaus

Hotel Sonnenburg Bedroom, Oberlech, Austria

Hotel Sonnenburg, Lech am Arlberg, Austria

Hotel Sonnenburg in Oberlech, Lech am Arlberg, Austria

Hotel Sonnenburg is a ski-in ski-out, family-friendly, literature-themed hotel in Oberlech, located 150 meters from the Petersbodenbahn chair lift, directly on the ski slope.

This is an ideal hotel if you’re traveling with children because you can take advantage of their free childcare service, which is provided 5 days per week, 5 hours per day, in summer.

The hotel also has a 24-hour children’s playroom, a youth room, and even a cinema with daily screenings of children’s movies.

If you’re not traveling with children, skip it.

This is a half-board hotel: breakfast and dinner are included in the room rate.

Bedrooms

Sonnenburg is basically two-interconnected hotels: the 5-star Stammhaus and the 4-star Landhaus. These two hotels are linked by an underground walkway.

The Stammhaus (“main house”) bedrooms are elegantly furnished and feature a lovely interplay of pastels and jewel tones. The beds and down bedding were divinely comfortable.

The Landhaus (“country house”) bedrooms are more traditional and by comparison quite dated.

They look like your Austrian grandma’s living room. However, these rooms are significantly cheaper.

Wellness & Spa

The hotel’s indoor pool is stunning. It couldn’t possible by more gorgeous. However, it’s difficult to enjoy, if you’re not here with kids.

The wellness area is divided between the pool area and the family spa area. The upstairs pool area encompasses the indoor pool as well as a family sauna and ladies sauna.

The downstairs family spa area contains:

Unfortunately, the spa area lacks a proper relaxation room. It’s difficult to unwind after a sauna session, because there’s no isolated relaxation space.

Hotel Restaurant

Breakfast

If we’re ranking hotels by breakfast, Hotel Sonnenburg wins. The breakfast is extraordinary. It never ends. It’s an opulent feast suitable for royalty.

Afternoon Snack

A complimentary, light afternoon snack is served daily. Unfortunately, we missed it, because we were hiking from Formarinsee to Spullersee.

Dinner

Sonnenburg serves a 5-course dinner. Compared to other hotels in Lech, we thought the main dishes were mediocre.

Staff & Atmosphere

When we stayed, Sonnenburg was in the middle of a team transition (summer 2020). The new dining staff made a lot of mistakes and were not in sync.

Based on recent reviews, it seems like they’ve worked out all the kinks and guests are genuinely satisfied with the staff.

5. Hotel Gotthard

4-star superior

Hotel Gotthard Swimming Pool in Lech am Arlberg, Austria

Hotel Gotthard Omes Brewery, Lech am Arlberg, Austria

Omes Brewery

Hotel Gotthard Bedroom, Lech am Arlberg, Austria

Hotel Gotthard is a hospitable, family-run hotel in Lech with its very own pastry-shop and brewery (Omes). They’ve been hosting guests for three generations.

The hotel has been expanded over the years, so it stretches across multiple buildings. Though the buildings are linked, it can be difficult to navigate seamlessly between them.

Breakfast is included in the room rate.

Bedrooms

Bedrooms are comfortable.

However, the designer guild upholstery and carpet choices are whacky and drab.

Colorful bright greens and purples dawn the chairs and curtains. I’m not entirely sure what style this is, but it’s questionable.

Wellness & Spa

The wellness area is very enjoyable, but it’s divided. The 10×7 meter indoor pool is in one building and the sauna area is in another. The sauna area contains:

You can also book various massages and cosmetic treatments during your stay.

Hotel Restaurant

Breakfast

The breakfast buffet features homemade bread and pastries, local cheese, eggs, and yoghurts, muesli, and more.

Dinner

There are two restaurants in the hotel: Gotthard Stube (the half board restaurant) and Lecherstube (the à la carte restaurant).

If you want to dine in either restaurant, you need to make reservations in advance.

Staff & Atmosphere

Everyone was really friendly and helpful: reception, dining staff, family.

The atmosphere is altogether casual and laid-back.

Omes Brewery

The in-house brewery is located in the old bakery of Hotel Gotthard.

Owner Clemens Walch and master brewer Martin Schnell brew a Pale Ale, Arlbeer, a Bavarian Helles, and a wheat beer.

The Omes beers are made from malted organic grain, Lech spring water, hops from Tettnang and brewer’s yeast.

You can drink Omes beer in the hotel’s bar and restaurants. You can also purchase bottles to take with you (starting at 4.90 EUR per bottle).

Good to know

You can join a guided hiking tour, organized by the hotel, at no extra charge. All planned hiking trips for the week are displayed at the reception. You just have to register the day before, by 6 pm. You can park in their underground, parking lot at no extra charge.
