Day 1: Drive to Val Gardena, Walk Vallunga Valley

Vallunga Valley, Dolomites

Drive to Val Gardena

You can start this 5 Dolomites itinerary from any nearby airport, or destination. Read How to Get to the Dolomites for info on the closest airports, train stations, and bus terminals.

Val Gardena (Gherdëina in Ladin, Gröden in German) is a valley in South Tyrol, which stretches between Valle Isarco (Eisacktal in German) and Sella Pass and Gardena Pass.

Wedged between the UNESCO World Heritage Site Puez-Odle Nature Park and the Sassolungo and Sella mountains, Val Gardena offers direct access to Seceda, Alpe di Siusi, and Vallunga Valley.

Here’s the approximate driving distances from nearby airports to Val Gardena:

Bolzano Airport (BZO), Italy: 50 minutes

Innsbruck Airport (INN), Austria: 1:30 hours

Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), Italy: 3:15 hours

Treviso Airport (TSF), Italy: 3:11 hours

Verona Airport (VRN), Italy: 2:10 hours

Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), Italy: 4:20 hours

Munich Airport (MUC), Germany: 3:35 hours

Vallunga Valley

The best thing to do in Val Gardena on your arrival day is to walk Vallunga Valley. This will help you acclimate on your first day.

Vallunga (Langental in German, La Val in Ladin) is a side valley of Val Gardena, located in Puez-Odle Nature Park. Cradled by the sheer, towering walls of the Puez mountains, this narrow 4.5 km-long-valley is a sublime destination for leisurely walking.

If you walk the full valley out-and-back, you’ll need 2:35 hours. However, you can walk for however long you’d like (e.g. 30 minutes, 1 hour, etc…).

Vallunga Valley Parking

Drive to the Vallunga paid car park at the valley entrance in Selva. Exact Location: Google Maps

It costs 8 EUR/day or .50 EUR/30 minutes to park here.

You can only pay with EUR coins.

Distance | 9.1 km out-and-back

Time Needed | 2:35 hours

Elevation Gain/Loss | 264 meters

Difficulty | Easy

Minimum Elevation | 1618 meters

Insider Tip | If you’re acclimated and have plenty of time, you can hike this interesting Val de Chedul – Vallunga Valley circuit trail.

Stay in Val Gardena

Stay 2 nights in Ortisei, Santa Cristina, or Selva di Val Gardena. You really can stay anywhere in the valley, because some destinations are closer to Ortisei, while others are closer to Santa Cristina and Selva. Read Best Val Gardena Hotels for an overview of the best accommodations in the valley.

Ortisei Accommodations: Casa al Sole (midrange), Chalet Hotel Hartmann – Adults Only (midrange)

Santa Cristina Accommodations: Smart Hotel Saslong (budget), Charme Hotel Uridl (midrange), or Dorfhotel Beludei (top choice – luxury)

Selva di Val Gardena Accommodations: Hotel Garni Morene (budget), Linder Cycling Hotel (luxury), or Hotel Tyrol (luxury)

Day 2: Seceda and Baita Seurasas

Seceda Dolomites, Puez-Odle Nature Park, Italy

On day 2 of your Dolomites Itinerary, we recommend dedicating your morning and early afternoon to hiking around Seceda. After a mountainside lunch, return to Val Gardena. In the hours leading up to sunset, we suggest hiking up to Baita Seurasas.

Seceda Hike

Seceda (2519 m) is a mountain in the Odle/Geisler Group, which serves as a viewpoint for admiring (maybe “worshiping” is the better word) the jagged Odle/Geisler peaks.

It’s remarkably easy to get to Seceda. Simply head to Ortisei and take the Ortisei-Furnes-Seceda cableways up to the mountain station.

While the Seceda viewpoint is the main attraction, it’s also the starting point for a lovely circuit trail to Rifugio Firenze.

The path follows the Seceda ridge to the Pana Scharte saddle and then descends to the Pieralongia mountain pasture, marked by two spires, and further down to Rifugio Firenze (2040 m, Regensburger Hütte in German), located beneath Mont de Stevia. From the hut, it’s a steady 461 meter ascent back to the Seceda cableway mountain station.

Read our Seceda to Rifugio Firenze hiking guide for a full trail description.

Seceda Trail Details

Starting Point | Seceda Cableway valley station | Google Maps

Trailhead | Seceda Cableway mountain station

Distance | 8.9 km circuit

Time Needed | 3:00 – 3:30 hours

Elevation Gain/Loss | 575 meters

Difficulty | Easy-Moderate

Insider Tip | If you want to skip the cableway, you can also hike to Seceda from the Cristauta – Praplan car park above Santa Cristina. Read our Monte Pic and Seceda trail guide. If you’re an experienced hiker looking for a challenging ascent route to Seceda, read our Resciesa to Seceda trail guide.

Baita Seurasas

In the hours leading up to sunset, we recommend driving up to the Cristauta – Praplan Car Park above Santa Cristina to start the short walk up to Baita Seurasas (45 minutes one-way).

Baita Seurasas is a family-run alpine pasture hut (“Baita”), located at 2020 meters on the southern slopes of Monte Pic. The Seurasas alpine pasture has been farmed for more than two centuries. Historically, the hut offered shelter and food to shepherds and reapers.

We recommend walking up here for two reasons. Baita Seurasas serves delicious South Tyrolean food and the hut overlooks the Sassolungo and Sella mountain groups. This is a great place to experience Enrosadira, or alpenglow. Time your visit, so that you’re here 1 hour before sunset.

From the Cristauta – Praplan Car Park, you can either follow trail 41 (forest trail), or trail 20 (forest road) to reach the hut. Both paths lead to Baita Seurasas in 45 minutes.

For even better views, continue hiking up trail 20 to the Seurasas mountain pasture, studded with hay huts. Very energetic hikers can continue all the way to Monte Pic (2380 m).

Baita Seurasas is typically open from mid June until mid October between 9 am and 5 pm.

Baita Seurasas Trail Details

Trailhead | Cristauta – Praplan Car Park | Google Maps

Distance | 4.5 km out-and-back

Time Needed | 2 hours

Elevation Gain/Loss | 379 meters

Difficulty | Moderate

Minimum Elevation | 1751 meters

Maximum Elevation | 2129 meters

Tip | If you’re dying to see Val di Funes, skip the hike to Baita Seurasas and drive to Santa Maddalena in Val di Funes. Photograph the Chiesetta di San Giovanni in Ranui chapel and take a short walk to the Santa Maddalena Church viewpoint, located along the Santa Maddalena Panorama Trail.

Stay in Val Gardena

Ortisei Accommodations: Casa al Sole (midrange), Chalet Hotel Hartmann – Adults Only (midrange)

Santa Cristina Accommodations: Smart Hotel Saslong (budget), Charme Hotel Uridl (midrange), or Dorfhotel Beludei (top choice – luxury)

Selva di Val Gardena Accommodations: Hotel Garni Morene (budget), Linder Cycling Hotel (luxury), or Hotel Tyrol (luxury)

Day 3: Alpe di Siusi, Passo Gardena, Armentara Meadows, and Cortina d’Ampezzo

Alpe di Siusi, Dolomites

Alpe di Siusi Walk

Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm in German, Mont Sëuc in Ladin) is the largest mountain pasture in Europe. This vast, rolling meadowland stretches between the foot of the Sassolungo Group and the Sciliar Group, high above Val Gardena.

Of all the places in the Dolomites, Alpe di Siusi is probably the most confusing place to visit. The plateau is etched with numerous hiking and cycling trails as well as roads. So, when you get up here, it’s hard to know where to go, because there are so many options.

The good news is that we’ve crafted the perfect Alpe di Siusi circuit hike, which starts at the Ortisei-Alpe di Siusi gondola mountain station.

This Alpe di Siusi hike combines the most scenic trails on the plateau and leads to our favorite alpine pasture huts: Rauchhütte, Gostner Schwaige, and Malga Sanon.

From Ortisei, take the Ortisei-Alpe di Siusi gondola up to Alpe di Siusi plateau.

Follow trail 9 to Malga Schgaguler. Continue on trail 9 all the way down to Saltria, a settlement located at the lowest point of Alpe di Siusi.

Ascend along the Steger Weg (trail 30) in the direction of Compaccio/Compatsch. Detour to Rauchhütte for lunch and then continue following trail 30 to the Steger-Dellai hotel. Follow 12A and later 6B east to Malga Sanon.

Complete the circuit to Malga Schgaguler and all the way back up to the Ortisei-Alpe di Siusi gondola mountain station.

Elevation Gain/Loss | 483 meters

Difficulty | Easy

The road to Compaccio/Compatsch is closed to private traffic between 9 am and 5 pm. Though you can only drive up before 9 am, you can drive down at any time.

From the P2 car park, walk along the road (12 A / 6) to the Belvedere dell’Alpe di Siusi viewpoint (Google Maps) in the direction of Sporthotel Sonne. You can continue following the circuit trail as described, first down to Saltria and then up the Steger Weg (trail 30) back to Compaccio/Compatsch.

Passo Gardena

Drive over Passo Gardena into Alta Badia, the Dolomites region that surrounds Upper Val Badia.

Passo Gardena is a gorgeous mountain pass between the Cir Group and the Sella Group. Many scenic hikes begin at the Gardena Pass including Gran Cir (climbing helmet needed), Sass da Ciampac (moderately difficult), and Cima Pisciadù (difficult).

Continue the drive to the village of Badia in Val Badia.

Armentara Meadows

If you skipped the Alpe di Siusi hike, or you’re keen on squeezing in one more hike today, we recommend walking across the Armentara Meadows, a gorgeous plateau beneath the Santa Croce rock face.

Thanks to the cableway ascent, this hike is completely downhill. Ascend with the La Crusc 1 and La Crusc 2 cableways to the pilgrimage church of Chiesa di Santa Croce/Heiligkreuz Church. From here, amble down to the Armentara Meadows and ultimately all the way down to Badia. This is a 3 hour hike.

Read our Armentara Meadows trail guide for more info.

Day 4: Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Cadini di Misurina Viewpoint, Lake Misurina, and Lake Antorno

Cadini di Misurina Hike, Dolomites

Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Cadini di Misurina

Tre Cime di Lavaredo is always a top priority on every Dolomites travel itinerary.

The easiest way to see these three mammoth peaks is by driving the Rifugio Auronzo Toll Road up to the Rifugio Auronzo car park, located at the south foot of Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Get an extra early start to avoid waiting in line at the toll gate.

From the Auronzo refuge, you can walk to theCadini di Misurina viewpoint (1 hour out-and-back) and then follow the circuit trail around Tre Cime di Lavaredo (4 hour circuit).

Tre Cime di Lavaredo Circuit Trail Details

Trailhead | Rifugio Auronzo Car Park | Google Maps

Elevation Gain/Loss | 430 meters

Difficulty | Easy-Moderate

Minimum Elevation | 2170 meters

Tip | Fit hikers can approach Tre Cime di Lavaredo from Val Campo di Dentro. This quiet alternative is great for those that want to escape the crowds. Follow this Torre dei Scarperi Circuit Trail.

Lake Antorno and Lake Misurina

On the drive back to Cortina d’Ampezzo, stop and photograph Lake Antorno and Lake Misurina.

Stay in Cortina d’Ampezzo

Budget | Hotel Meuble Oasi

Midrange | Baita Fraina, Hotel Villa Alpina and Ambra Cortina Luxury&Fashion Hotel (midrange-luxury)

Luxury | Camina Suite & Spa, HOTEL de LËN, Dolomiti Lodge Alverà and Grand Hotel Savoia Cortina d’Ampezzo

Day 5: Lago di Braies and Prato Piazza

Lake Prags, Lake Braies, Dolomites

On day 5 of your Dolomites trip, you can explore the immediate mountains surrounding Cortina d’Ampezzo. Standout hikes include the Croda da Lago Circuit Trail (moderately difficult), Tofana di Rozes Circuit Trail (moderately difficult – difficult), Lago di Sorapis Circuit Trail (moderately difficult), or Cinque Torri and Rifugio Nuvolau Circuit Trail (moderate).

Alternatively, you can visit Lago di Braies and Prato Piazza in the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park.

If you’re visiting in peak summer season, we recommend hiking the Croda da Lago trail, or the Tofana di Rozes trail.

If you’re visiting during shoulder season, consider visiting Lago di Braies and Prato Piazza.

Lago di Braies

Drive up Val di Landro (Höhlensteintal), the valley between the Braies/Prags Dolomites and the Sesto/Sexten Dolomites, to Val Pusteria (Pustertal).

There are two mountain lakes located just off the road: Lago di Landro (Dürrensee) and Lago di Dobbiaco (Toblacher See).

When you reach Val Pusteria, turn left. Drive west for 7 km (~6 minutes), and turn left again onto the Braies/Prags Valley Road. Continue driving to Lago di Braies. Park at the P2 Car Park (Google Maps) near the lake.

Between July 10th and September 10th, there are traffic regulations in Braies Valley. Either pre-book parking at Lago di Braies, or get to the lake before 9 am.

Read our guide to Lake Braies for information on where to park and what to do around the lake.

Tip | One of our favorite hikes in the Dolomites leads from Lake Braies to Hochalpenkopf Peak.

Prato Piazza

Another top attraction in Braies Valley is Prato Piazza (Plätzwiese), a high plateau cradled between Picco di Vallandro (Dürrenstein) and the Croda Rossa d’Ampezzo (Hohe Gaisl) massif.

Prato Piazza is a fantastic destination for leisurely walking and eating lunch in a charming alpine pasture hut like Malga Prato Piazza (Almhütte Plätzwiese).

Depending on when you arrive, you can either drive up to the plateau, or take a shuttle bus to the plateau. Find out what the current traffic regulations are on prags.bz.

You can walk to Monte Specie (easy), a panoramic summit overlooking the Sexten Dolomites. If you took the shuttle up to Prato Piazza from Ponticello, consider returning to Ponticello via the Gaisl High Trail (moderate).

Dolomites Itinerary Variations: 3 Days, 4 Days, and 6 Days

Monte Pic, Dolomites

Dolomites Itinerary 3 Days

With only 2 nights in the Dolomites, stay both nights in Ortisei, Val Gardena.

Day 1 | Alpe di Siusi, Stay in Ortisei

Day 2 | Seceda, Val di Funes, Stay in Ortisei

Day 3 | Passo Gardena, Sass da Ciampac hike, or Armentara Meadows walk

On day 1, take the Ortisei-Alpe di Siusi gondola up to the plateau. The gondola operating times change throughout the season (8:30 am until 5 pm – 6:30 pm)

If you can’t squeeze in the 4:30 hour Alpe di Siusi hike before the gondola stops operating, you can take the gondola up (purchase a one-way ticket) and follow this Alpe di Siusi-Monte Pana-Santa Cristina trail back down the valley. From Santa Cristina, take a bus back to Ortisei.

Dolomites Itinerary 6 Days

With the extra day, we recommend visiting Val di Funes. Our favorite hikes are: Adolf Munkel Trail (easy), Rifugio Genova Circuit Trail (moderate), and the Tullen Summit (difficult).

Watch the sunset at either: the viewing platform of the St. Johann in Ranui Church (Google Maps), or the Santa Maddalena Church Viewpoint, located on the Santa Maddalena Panorama Trail.
