2-Week Slovenia Road Trip Itinerary (Scenic Route) (original) (raw)

We can’t praise traveling in Slovenia enough. It’s a country that is profoundly beautiful and pristine. It’s also a country that is mindful about preserving its natural environment.

This Slovenia road trip itinerary begins and ends in Ljubljana. From the capital, the drive leads to the lovely town of Piran on the Adriatic Sea. Next, the route departs the coast and follows Soča Valley into the heart of the Julian Alps.

After visiting Kranjska Gora, your road trip continues to Pokljuka Plateau and Lake Bled.

Explore the beautiful lakes and alpine pastures of Triglav National Park, including Lake Bohinj, and then drive to the heavenly Logar Valley in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, before returning to Ljubljana.

If you have less than two weeks, you can compress this itinerary. At the end of this post, we’ve outlined a 10-day Slovenia itinerary as well as a 7-day Slovenia itinerary. For more ideas, check out our 5-day Slovenia road trip itinerary.

We recommend following this Slovenia road trip route in late Spring, Summer, or early Fall.

Driving in Slovenia

If you’re driving into Slovenia from a neighboring country, make sure to purchase a vignette after crossing the border.

You can buy a vignette at any petrol station. If you’re renting a car in Ljubljana, your rental car company will likely provide it.

In this Slovenia road trip itinerary, we’ve provided a few opportunities to cross into neighboring countries (Italy, Austria) for several hours, in order to see some scenic places. Please confirm with your rental car company, whether that’s possible.

You may need to buy a cross-border permit. Note, those are just alternative options. If you want to drive the entire route in Slovenia, you definitely can.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

Day 1: Ljubljana

Every trip to Slovenia ought to start and end in Ljubljana. Slovenia’s capital is an approachable city that is best discovered on foot.

As you wander the city’s streets, you’ll notice that Ljubljana is heavily influenced by Viennese and Venetian architecture, resulting in a delightful fusion. To get acquainted with the city center, join a walking tour.

We love returning to Ljubljana. Many cities in Europe feel like an overwhelming “to-do” list. Ljubljana, by contrast, feels like a “to-be” list. You’ll feel compelled to simply enjoy yourself.

For us, that means hopping between wine bars and cafés along the Ljubljanica River, visiting shops, and hiking up to Castle Hill with an ice cream in hand.

So, in the name of enjoying yourself, here are our favorite epicurean things to do in Ljubljana, city of dragons.

Open Kitchen

Open Kitchen is a food market that takes place every Friday from late March until late October. The market features 30 different vendors, including local wine shops, restaurants, and tourist farms.

Wine lovers ought to check out the J&B Vinoteka stand. J&B is a specialty wine shop in Ljubljana that sells natural and orange wines. Unfortunately, the shop isn’t a wine bar (we hope they open one soon!), so this is your chance to savor some of Slovenia’s most mind-blowing orange wines. Start with the Sun Drops, 2013 by Vino Suman / Suman Wines.

Opening Hours | 10 am – 9 pm, Fridays only

Location | Pogačar Square | Google Maps

Wine Bar Šuklje

Šuklje is an all-around great wine bar in Ljubljana. To start, they offer exceptional wine flights, including a regional flight featuring wines from the Vipava Valley and Goriška Brda.

Because Šuklje is located on the pedestrian Breg street, you can choose between their sunny outdoor seating area or their elegant interior.

Piran, Slovenia

Day 2: Piran

On day 2 of your two week Slovenia itinerary, drive 1:30 hours to Piran.

Parking in Piran

Piran is a pedestrian city, so you must park before entering the town. There are clear road signs directing drivers to the paid parking structures. We parked in the upper parking lot. Cash and credit cards are accepted.

There’s a free bus that connects the parking lot to the town, however, it’s only a 10-15 minute walk, so there’s no need to wait for the bus.

Best Things to Do in Piran

Picture-perfect Piran (Pirano) is a seaside town on the Adriatic Coast. With its Venetian-gothic architecture and coastal charm, Piran will capture your heart in no time at all.

After parking, walk down the hill and follow the promenade into town. The walkway will wrap around a small harbor, filled with fishing boats.

From here, you’ll see the marvelous pastel-colored Tartini Square. When we arrived, there was a folk festival taking place in the square.

Next, continue the walk along the seaside to the tip of the peninsula, marked by the iconic Our Lady of Health church (Cerkev Marije Zdravja).

When you’re hungry, head to Fritolin pri Cantini for lunch. Situated in a delightful 1st May Square tucked away from the sea, this bustling outdoor café serves freshly grilled and fried seafood. We ordered the grilled sea bass and grilled calamari. They were both worth the wait.

After lunch, walk up to the bell tower of St. George (entrance fee) for sweeping views of Piran. Next, head to the medieval fortress walls for more enchanting views of the city (entrance fee).

Now, it’s time to wander aimlessly through Piran’s maze-like streets. For dinner, head to the seafood restaurant Pri Mari.

Stay 1 Night in Piran

Each accommodation in Piran handles parking differently. We recommend contacting your hotel in advance, so you know where to park and how to pay.

Budget | Piraneska is a recently renovated guesthouse located near the main square of Piran.

Midrange | MEMENTO is an aesthetically pleasing and tastefully designed bed and breakfast in Piran. Breakfast is included.

Luxury | Hotel Piran is a seaside hotel dating back to 1913 and located in the old center of Piran, very close to Tartini Square. Guests have access to a spa and wellness center and an on-site restaurant. But, the real treat is the hotel’s rooftop terrace (during summer). Breakfast is included. Hotel Piran offers a 50% discount on parking in the parking house Fornače, when you pay the parking fee at the hotel reception.
