An Elyria man with multiple convictions for operating a vehicle impaired, was arrested again on a felony OVI charge after authorities said he crashed his vehicle while allegedly impaired, according to a police report from the Elyria Police Department.

Mario L. Newson, 36, is facing charges of operating a vehicle while impaired, OVI refusal, driving under suspension and failure to control, according to the report.

Newson was convicted of OVI twice in 2012, and two more times in 2013 and once in 2025 enhancing this OVI charge to a felony, the police report stated.

Police were called to the crash scene at 3:30 p.m. May 18 where they found an unoccupied heavily damaged Hyundai Sonata in the street next to a telephone poll which had been knocked down.

A couple minutes later, officers located the driver, identified as Newson, in a driveway of a property in the 1100 block of Garden Street.

“Newson was holding a bottle of beer and smelled of an alcoholic beverage,” the report stated. “He had a red substance, believed to be blood, on the front of his shirt and he appeared to be bleeding near his right eye.”

A resident witnessed the crash and saw Newson exit the driver seat of the crashed vehicle, according to the report.

LifeCare Ambulance paramedics arrived on scene and transported Newson to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center for treatment.

Officers later met with Newson at the hospital to issue him the citations and a mandatory court date.
