A majority of Horry County voters approve the renewal of a 1% penny sales tax in a referendum question at the election polls on Tuesday.

According to unofficial results with 100% of precincts reporting, voters have approved the question 80,102 to 37,182. County election officials will certify results in the coming days.

The penny sales tax, which will take a penny off every dollar of purchase is expected to generate about $1.9 billion over the next 15 years, according to the school district.

The revenue generated from the 1% sales tax will pay for projects such as new facilities and renovations to existing schools.

Here’s a breakdown of what percent will go to the school district and local colleges.

Horry County Schools is the third largest school district in South Carolina with an enrollment of over 46,000 students. Coastal Carolina University has seen a 44% enrollment growth from 2011-2021. Horry-Georgetown Technical College had a record enrollment for the 2022-23 school year with over 8,250 students, according to Horry County Schools.
