...EXTREMELY DANGEROUS HURRICANE FLOYD TAKING AIM AT THE BAHAMAS...

A HURRICANE WARNING FOR THE THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS...INCLUDING THE ABACO ISLANDS...ANDROS ISLAND...BERRY ISLANDS...BIMINI... ELEUTHERA...GRAND BAHAMA AND NEW PROVIDENCE ISLAND. A HURRICANE WARNING ALSO REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS...INCLUDING CAT ISLAND...EXUMAS ISLANDS...LONG ISLAND...RUM CAY...AND SAN SALVADOR ISLAND.

A TROPICAL STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS AND THE SOUTHEASTERN BAHAMAS.

A HURRICANE WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR THE FLORIDA EAST COAST FROM SOUTH OF FLAGLER BEACH TO HALLANDALE.

INTERESTS ELSEWHERE ALONG THE FLORIDA EAST COAST AND THE SOUTHEAST U.S. COAST SHOULD CLOSELY MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS DANGEROUS HURRICANE.

AT 8 AM AST...1200Z...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE FLOYD WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 23.9 NORTH...LONGITUDE 71.4 WEST OR ABOUT 195 MILES... 315 KM...EAST OF SAN SALVADOR IN THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS.

FLOYD IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST NEAR 14 MPH...22 KM/HR...AND THIS MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE TODAY WITH A GRADUAL TURN TO THE WEST-NORTHWEST TONIGHT.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 155 MPH...250 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. FLOYD IS A STRONG CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR/ SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE. SOME FLUCTUATIONS IN STRENGTH ARE LIKELY DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 105 MILES...165 KM... FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 290 MILES...465 KM.

THE LATEST MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE REPORTED BY THE AIR FORCE HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT WAS 921 MB...27.20 INCHES.

STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 15 TO 20 FEET ABOVE NORMAL TIDE LEVELS... ACCOMPANIED BY LARGE AND DANGEROUS BATTERING WAVES ARE POSSIBLE IN THE HURRICANE WARNING AREA.

AN OUTER RAINBAND OF FLOYD IS PRODUCING LOCALLY HEAVY RAINS OVER PORTIONS OF PUERTO RICO AND THE VIRGIN ISLANDS.

REPEATING THE 5 AM AST POSITION...23.9 N... 71.4 W. MOVEMENT TOWARD...WEST NEAR 14 MPH. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...155 MPH. MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...921 MB.
