Chet Faker, 360, The Jezabels, Royal Headache and more pick up Jagermeister Independent Music Awards.

The entire independent music industry should be waking up with sore heads after a highly entertaining seventh annual Jagermeister Independent Music Awards held last night at Revolt in Kensington.

Hip-hop sensation 360 and electro-soul favourite Chet Faker had the most nominations coming in, but in the end Faker (AKA Nick Murphy) was the only artist who scored more than one award, winning Best Independent Single/EP for his mini-album Thinking In Textures and Breakthrough Independent Artist.

He also delivered the performance of the night (and a surprise one at that), stilling the room with a stripped back version of ‘I’m Into You’.

360 followed up last year’s People’s Choice award by nabbing the award for Best Independent Hip Hop Album and ruffling a few feathers by pointing out during his speech that Falling And Flying was ultimately backed by major label EMI and he didn’t feel like he deserved to be nominated.

Equally outspoken about the ‘independence’ of a few of the night’s nominees were Royal Headache from Sydney, who won the award for Best Independent Album.

Sydney quartet The Jezabels scored their second Best Independent Artist award in a row. And the Harbour City kept raking them in, with Lanie Lane getting Best Independent Blues And Roots Album, Hermitude getting Best Independent Dance/Electronica Album, Mike Nock Trio scoring Best Independent Jazz Album, and hip-hop label Elefant Traks getting the well-deserved Best Independent Label award in its debut year.

Best Independent Hard Rock Or Punk Album went rightly to Brisbane’s DZ Deathrays, Best Independent Country Album was delivered to Jess Ribeiro & The Bone Collectors and Best Independent Dance/Electronica Single went to Tom Piper & Daniel Harley for ‘LGFU’

Aside from Chet Faker’s showstopper, the masses were also treated to live performances from Hermitude, Lanie Lane, House Vs Hurricane, Loon Lake, The Bamboos and Tim Rogers, and Paul Kelly with Dan Kelly.
