Harry Leahey, a jazz guitarist and teacher, died on Sunday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J. He was 54 years old and lived in North Plainfield, N.J., until last year, when he moved to Iselin, N.J.
He died of colon cancer, said the funeral director, Mark Chamberlain.
Mr. Leahey, who began playing publicly at the age of 13, appeared with several jazz groups, including ones led by Gerry Mulligan and Phil Woods. He taught at William Paterson College and Jersey City State College.
He is survived by his parents, Edith and Henry Leahey of Plainfield, N.J.; two sons, James and Dennis, both of North Plainfield; two daughters, Deborah Shown of Bartonsville, Pa., and Gillian, of Green Brook, N.J.; two brothers, Michael, of North Plainfield, and Patrick, of Plainfield; a sister, Edith Dillon of Saratoga, N.Y., and four grandchildren.
