About.com, a Web information service owned by The New York Times Company, plans to announce today that it has bought ConsumerSearch.com, a Web site that compiles reviews of consumer products, for $33 million in cash.

ConsumerSearch.com provides thousands of reviews in about 250 categories of products, ranging from digital cameras to snow blowers . The site generated 25 million page views in the first quarter of the year, with 3 million unique monthly visitors.

Within the last eight months, About.com has also made two other acquisitions. One was a Web site that provides access to information about hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and doctors, UCompareHealthCare.com. The other was a site that offers weight-loss tools and nutritional information, Calorie-Count.com.

ConsumerSearch.com provides rankings and meta-reviews of products, or reviews of products by other expert Web sites. “Product reviews are highly prized by users,” said Scott B. Meyer, president and chief executive of About.com.

About.com, among the 15 most visited Web sites by unique monthly visitors, was acquired by the Times Company for $410 million in 2005. It had 33.5 million unique visitors in March 2007, 14 percent higher than a year earlier.
