Bajirao Mastani is a historical romantic drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and released in 2015. The movie is a portrayal of the love story between the Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao I and his second wife Mastani. Bajirao (played by Ranveer Singh) is a successful and ambitious Maratha leader who is known for his military skills and strategic tactics. He is married to Kashibai (played by Priyanka Chopra), whom he loves deeply, but is drawn towards Mastani (played by Deepika Padukone), a beautiful and courageous warrior princess. Bajirao, while on his way to Sironja, comes across a woman who seeks his help to fight off invaders. She introduces herself as Mastani, the daughter of a Hindu Rajput king and his Persian Muslim consort. Bajirao is impressed by her skills as a warrior and decides to help her with his army, leading to their victory over the invaders. Mastani's father is thrilled with Bajirao's assistance and invites him to spend Holi with them. During this time, Bajirao and Mastani fall in love, and he gifts her his dagger, not realizing that it is a symbol of marriage among the Rajputs. Once Bajirao returns to his hometown of Pune, his wife Kashibai shows him their newly-built Shaniwar Wada and the Aaina Mahal (Hall of Mirrors), which allows her to see him from her room. Mastani travels to Pune to be with Bajirao, but his mother Radhabai does not welcome her and assigns her to stay in the palace for courtesans instead of accepting her as a daughter-in-law. Despite the harsh treatment, Mastani remains steadfast in her desire to be with Bajirao. However, Bajirao reminds her that he is already married and that he can never be hers completely, as his court will never accept her as his wife. Mastani agrees to these terms, and Bajirao proclaims her as his second wife. The movie follows the hardships of Bajirao and Mastani as they try to live with each other, unaffected by societal norms.

TOI
BajiraoMastani resembles JodhaaAkbar with teeth that bite, MughaleAzam with shades of philosophical grey. It rediscovers roots to Maratha pride and bravely confronts one of India's most crucial questions now.

At its core, Bajirao Mastani is all about love. Be it Bajiraos unconditional love for Mastani and Kashibai both, Mastanis daring and dedicated love for Bajirao or Kashibais sacrificing love for her husband. The film conveys it all.
