About APA's Planners Press Transition
In December 2016, APA shared news regarding its planned transition out of the book publishing business. On May 23, 2017, APA's Planners Press imprint became part of the Taylor & Francis Group. Routledge took over online book sales and distribution on September 1, 2017.
Taylor & Francis, through its Routledge imprint, is a leading book and journal publisher in the Humanities and Social Sciences, Psychology, Behavioral Sciences and Health, and Built Environment subject areas. In 2007, Taylor & Francis began publishing the Journal of the American Planning Association, and in 2011, APA appointed Taylor & Francis to be its exclusive distributor of Planners Press titles outside of North America. The organizations have enjoyed a productive partnership for many years, and this acquisition benefits APA and our authors, as well as Taylor & Francis.
"Planners Press books will not only maintain their presence in the marketplace, but also benefit from a wealth of new marketing and editorial support that will expand their reach to new audiences," said APA Chief Communications Officer Harriet Bogdanowicz. "While Planners Press authors enjoy the benefits that a global publishing company provides, APA will realign its publishing operations in support of the association's core mission — advocating excellence in planning, promoting education and citizen empowerment, and providing its members with the tools and support necessary to meet the challenges of growth and change."
Authors were notified in July 2016 about the transition, which includes the acquisition of the entire Planners Press print inventory.
"We at Routledge pride ourselves on the highest standards, as well as a friendly and personable service," said Jeremy North, general manager for Routledge Books, in his welcome letter to authors.
