The Prescott Fire Department service is comprised of 29 volunteer professional firefighters. The Department is led by Fire Chief Renny Rayner. In addition to firefighting and life-saving services, the Department's emphasis is on fire prevention, providing fire inspection, and fire education programs throughout the community.
Fire Prevention Week
Prescott Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) – the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week (FPW) for more than 100 years – to promote this year’s FPW campaign, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”
The campaign, which runs from October 6-12, 2024, works to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.
According to NFPA, smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than 54 per cent. Meanwhile, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
Prescott Fire Department encourages all residents to actively support the 2024 FPW theme, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”
Prescott Fire Department offers these key smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines:
• Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
• Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
• Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
• Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
Prescott Fire Department is hosting its annual Open House at the Fire Hall, 302 Centre Street, on October 12, 2024, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in support of Fire Prevention Week. The event will include a free barbecue, interactive stations, and a visit from Sparky! Come join us!

Enbridge Gas teams up with Prescott Fire Department to Reduce Fire and Carbon Monoxide Deaths through Safe Community Project Zero
TOWN OF PRESCOTT, ON, October 16, 2023 – Today, Enbridge Gas Inc. (Enbridge Gas), and Prescott Fire Department announced they are working together to improve home safety and bring fire and carbon monoxide-related deaths down to zero.
Prescott Fire Department received 114 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms through Safe Community Project Zero–a public education campaign with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council (FMPFSC) that will provide more than 10,000 alarms to residents in 50 municipalities across Ontario.
This year, Enbridge Gas invested $315,000 in Safe Community Project Zero, and over the past 15 years, the program has provided more than 86,000 alarms to Ontario fire departments.
When properly installed and maintained, combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms help provide early warning to safely escape from a house fire or carbon monoxide exposure. Carbon monoxide is a toxic, odourless gas that is a by-product of incomplete combustion of many types of common fuels.
“Properly maintaining fuel burning equipment is the best way to reduce potential exposure to carbon monoxide, and an alarm is a critical second line of defense for protection. When we implement these strategies together, we protect our loved ones from carbon monoxide poisoning, also known as the silent killer,” says Scott Harris, Eastern Region Supervisor Operations, Enbridge Gas.
“Across Ontario there is a renewed focus on the importance of having working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home. The objective of Safe Community Project Zero is to deliver these alarms to areas where they are needed most,” says Jon Pegg, Ontario Fire Marshal and Chair of the FMPFSC. “It’s a program that fire departments can adopt to help educate their communities about the requirement for all Ontario homes to have a carbon monoxide alarm if they have a fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage.”
