After 2019 failed to deliver us a new Assassin’s Creed title (the last one was Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey which released in October 2018), fans of the series have turned to rumor and speculation in order to ascertain the direction that Ubisoft’s ultra successful franchise might take next.

The prevailing rumor right now is that Assassin’s Creed will venture into Norse mythology in its next instalment which is due on PS4 and PS5 in 2020 – a bout of speculation that has been fleshed out by a near constant stream of rumor. Equally, it’s also worth mentioning that Ubisoft head cheese Yves Guillemot stated his desire in regards to a mainline Assassin’s Creed title set in a Chinese setting (previously the setting had been used in the first of the Chronicles spin-offs, and Shao Jun, a highly skilled assassin, is trained by fan-favourite protagonist Ezio during his later days):

We would love to do that. So I can’t tell you more today but we think it would be fantastic too. As you remember we had some 2D Assassin’s Creed (Chronicles) that were based in China, so I can’t give you a clear answer, but it is something we would love to do at one point.

So it is then with this latest rumor that we return to the idea of Assassin’s Creed taking a trip to Norsetown as it would appear that Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok has been spotted on Gamestop’s Italian storefront.

Referring to a special edition of the game (which if Ragnarok actually exists, could plausibly be called the ‘Mjolnir Edition’), this particular Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok listing falls apart under scrutiny – not least because the game carries the exact same presell code as Watch Dogs Legion, suggesting at the very least something of a sloppy mock-up job.

Then, rumors aside, there’s the release timing of Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok. With Watch Dogs Legion scheduled to release sometime this year, it would make sense that Ubisoft would want to have just one open-world actioner on the docket, rather than two and risk the potential commercial cannibalisation of one or the other as a result.

Certainly, it’s prudent to expect that we will hear something sooner or later about the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Let’s just hope it’s sooner rather than later, eh?
