TRIPS AND VISITS
Our most recent day visits have been to Manor House in Sheffield – the site of Mary Queen of Scots captivity during the reign of Elizabeth I. We have also made established close contact with the History Department of the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) and have conducted a number of study events for pupils and students in Years 11, 12 and 13
The Department has run a number of successful trips to the Battlefields of Ypres and the Somme with a focus on the stories of the old boys who fought and died in the conflict in Belgium and France.
We have also run extended visits to Berlin with a focus on the Cold War and life in the GDR. In recent times this was expanded to a 5 day trip that also visited several sites linked to the perpetration of the Holocaust.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR
The Department has established links with the Holocaust Education Trust. In November, each year, at least two Sixth Form students are invited to take part in a three-day course: Lessons from Auschwitz.
The Department has also been the venue for a temporary exhibition on the life of Anne Frank, this was organised through the Anne Frank Trust and as a result we have organised a day trip to visit the Anne Frank House Museum in Amsterdam.
Potential historical visits run by the department are constantly under review.
